The Indian women’s cricket team, under the leadership of skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, is hosting South Africa for a multi-format series from June 16 to July 9. India is currently leading the ODI series 1-0. In the 2nd ODI, all-rounder Marizanne Kapp marked her 250th international appearance for South Africa.
Kapp began her international cricket journey with the South African team at the age of 19, debuting in the Women’s One Day International against Australia during the ICC Women’s World Cup in Newcastle in March 2009. Since then, she has played 144 ODIs, accumulating 2,935 runs with two centuries and fifteen half-centuries, maintaining an average of 33.73. With the ball, she has picked up 157 wickets, including one five-wicket haul and four four-wicket hauls. Her lone five-wicket haul was achieved against England during the World Cup on March 14, 2022.
Recently, Kapp joined the elite ranks as the fifth player to surpass the milestone of scoring 2,500 runs and claiming 100 wickets in WODIs, solidifying her reputation as one of the finest all-rounders in women’s cricket.
In June 2009, Kapp made her debut in Women’s T20 International (WT20I) cricket against Australia during the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in Taunton. Since then, she has featured in 103 T20Is, accumulating 1,431 runs with four half-centuries, maintaining an average of 20.73. Additionally, she has claimed 81 wickets, including one four-wicket haul. In T20Is, she achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first-ever South African player to secure a hat-trick, accomplished against Bangladesh in 2013, making her the third player overall to do so.
Kapp made her Test debut for South Africa against India during South Africa’s tour of India in Mysore in November 2014. She has featured in only a couple of Tests so far, accumulating 212 runs but has not picked up any wickets yet. In the long format, her notable performance includes scoring 150 runs against England in June 2022, thus leaving her mark in the red-ball format.
Marizanne Kapp is the second South African player to reach the milestone of 250-plus international matches.
The South Africa tour of India series features three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. Following the ODI series, the teams will compete in a one-off, four-day red-ball Test match and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), all in Chennai.
