Jess Jonassen, a versatile bowler, has etched her name as a vital player in Australia’s cricketing triumphs across all formats. Her journey into cricket began at around 10 or 11 years old. Growing up in rural Queensland, Jess had to play in boys’ teams as there were no girls-only cricket programs available at that time.
Jonassen made her international debut in January 2012, quickly establishing herself as a formidable force in the world of cricket.
In the domestic circuit, Jonassen has made significant contributions. She was named the Player of the Tournament in the 2014–15 season of the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL). Her leadership skills were also recognized as she took on the role of captain for the Queensland Fire from the 2020–21 WNCL season.
Internationally, Jonassen’s impact is evident across all three formats. As of 2024, she has taken three five-wicket hauls and scored two half-centuries.
In T20 Internationals, Jonassen made her debut on January 20, 2012, against New Zealand during New Zealand’s tour of Australia at North Sydney. She made an impressive start by picking up two wickets. As of 2024, Jonassen has amassed over 90 wickets and scored more than 430 runs in T20Is.
Her ODI debut followed shortly on January 25, 2012, against New Zealand during the Rose Bowl series at Sydney. Over the years, she has become a cornerstone of Australia’s ODI bowling attack, accumulating more than 140 wickets and scoring over 600 runs as of 2024.
In the longer format, Jonassen made her Test debut on August 11, 2015, against England during Australia’s tour of England and Ireland at Canterbury. She made a remarkable impression by contributing both with the bat and the ball, scoring 99 and 54 runs and taking 1/36, earning the Player of the Match award. As of 2024, Jonassen has taken more than five wickets and scored more than 290 runs in Tests.
Despite her successes, Jonassen’s career has not been without challenges. By 2018, she had undergone four knee operations, showcasing her resilience and determination to continue performing at the highest level.
In franchise cricket, Jonassen is a prominent player for the Brisbane Heat in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and the Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
At the WBBL, Jonassen has been leading the Brisbane Heat since 2020. As of 2024, she holds the record for the most wickets in the tournament with 162, underscoring her pivotal role in her team’s successes.
She has been honored with several individual awards throughout her career. She was named the Women’s National Cricket League Player of the Year for the 2014–15 season and has been recognized as the Queensland Fire Player of the Year twice, in the 2010–11 and 2014–15 seasons. Additionally, she was awarded the Brisbane Heat Most Valuable Player for the 2019–20 season.
