West Indies squad for 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is against New Zealand Announced

West Indies are set to host New Zealand for the first time in 8 years for as many as 8 white-ball games. The last time both sides had a clash in a bilateral series was way back in 2014 which had the visitors lose the ODI series 4-0 and then bounced back to clinch the T20I series 2-1, winning the final game in a super over.

 

 

West Indies and New Zealand are set to play 3 ODI and 5 T20I games from the 16th of September to the 6th of October in Antigua. All the games on the schedule are to be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

West Indies squad for ODI series :

Hayley Matthews (C), Stafanie Taylor, Aaliyah Alleyne, Shemaine Campbelle, Shamilia Connell, Afy Fletcher, Cherry Ann Fraser, Shabika Gajnabi, Jannillea Glasgow, Sheneta Grimmond, Chinelle Henry, Kyshona Knight, Natasha McLean, Chedean Nation, Karishma Ramharack, Shakera Selman, Rashada Williams.

The CWI media release shared, “The squad was selected with the consideration of performances in the recently concluded The 6ixty and the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) tournaments.” It also has been understood that Mandy Mangru and Kaysia Schultz have also joined the players in Antigua for a ten-day training camp led by head coach Courtney Walsh.

Newly appointed skipper, Hayley Matthews, will be leading the West Indies squad for the first time. A few highlights from the squad named see the returns of experienced wicketkeeper-batter Natasha McLean and off-spinner Sheneta Grimmond and a place for the uncapped, left-arm pace bowler Jannillea Glasgow.

West Indies for the series against New Zealand are set to miss the services of Anisa Mohammed; who’s on a 6-month break away from the game, Deandra Dottin; who announced her retirement from international cricket citing issues with the group and Kycia Knight who’s dropped after a string of underwhelming performances.

West Indies chief selector for women’s cricket, Ann Browne-John, said, “The New Zealand series is very important on the women’s cricket landscape not only because it starts a new cycle, but also because it is part of the preparation leading towards the T20 World Cup in South Africa.

“With a few players unavailable at this time, for different reasons, like the experienced Anisa Mohammed, Kycia Knight and recently retired Deandra Dottin, the selectors were still able to get a blend of senior and developing players including Under-19 player Jannillea Glasgow and returning players Natasha McLean and Sheneta Grimmond. Ultimately, we believe that captain Hayley Matthews, in her first series, will have a promising squad of players to start building with.”
