Essex Women have secured the services of promising all-rounder Bryony Gillgrass on a permanent basis, with the 19-year-old signing a rookie contract that will keep her at the club until the end of the 2028 season. The announcement marks an important step in Gillgrass’s young career, following an encouraging first season at Chelmsford, where she quickly became a valuable member of the squad.

Gillgrass initially joined Essex on a short-term contract during the summer of 2026 but has now earned a longer-term opportunity after making a positive impression with her performances. Her journey to Essex includes progressing through the Warwickshire Women’s academy before representing Worcestershire Women in Tier Two cricket. Having made the transition to Essex, the young all-rounder has shown encouraging signs of development with both bat and ball, making her a player the club will be keen to nurture over the coming seasons.
Reflecting on her new contract, Gillgrass expressed her excitement and pride at continuing her journey with Essex. She spoke positively about her experience during the summer, highlighting the warm welcome she received from the players and coaching staff. The teenager also shared her enthusiasm about the team’s ambitions, looking forward to seeing how far the group can progress through the winter and into the next season. Her comments underline the confidence and sense of belonging she has developed since joining the club.
During the 2026 season, Gillgrass made 14 appearances for Essex Women across competitions, with her debut coming at Castle Park, Colchester, in the County Cup. She made a useful contribution with the ball, picking up six wickets for the club. Her best bowling figures of 2-26 came against Somerset, highlighting her ability to provide important breakthroughs and contribute to the team’s bowling resources. While still developing her all-round game, the experience gained through regular appearances will be valuable as she looks to establish herself further in the Essex setup.
Her progress has also earned recognition on the international stage. At the end of September, Gillgrass was named in England Women’s Under-19 squads for the upcoming ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup and the bilateral series against India. Alongside Essex teammates Amelie Bishop and Clara Thaker, she will represent England Under-19s in a five-match T20 series against India in November and December. The series will serve as important preparation ahead of the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Nepal and Bangladesh.
Essex Women’s Assistant Coach and Batting Lead Nick Browne praised Gillgrass’s rapid development throughout the 2026 campaign, particularly her progress with both bat and ball. He highlighted her England Under-19 selection as further recognition of the hard work and performances she has delivered at club level. Browne also expressed his delight at the short-term agreement becoming a permanent contract, backing the youngster to produce match-winning performances in the years ahead.
With a contract secured until 2028 and an exciting international opportunity awaiting her, Gillgrass has a promising period ahead. Her continued development could prove significant for Essex Women as they look to build a competitive squad and strengthen their performances in the seasons to come.
