How can India, England, West Indies qualify for Semi-Finals?

The 2022 World Cup is at its business end and we aren’t yet confirmed with the top 4 teams going into Semi-Finals. Australia and South Africa have already sealed their spot in the Semis at no.1 and no.2 positions. It’s no.3 and no.4 that’s up for grabs. England, India, and West Indies are 3 teams who have the chance of making it to the Semis. Let us find the possible ways these teams can make it to the Semis.

West Indies started the world cup with a bang as they won the first 2 games against New Zealand and England in a close margin. Then, they had 2 big losses against India and Australia. They narrowly won over Bangladesh and rain played a spoilt sport in their last 2 as they lost against Pakistan in a 20 over match and their last match against South Africa got washed out.

They are the first team to finish off all their league matches. At the end of the league stage, they have 3 wins, 3 losses, and one no result totaling up 7 points at -0.890 NRR which is 2nd worst in the tournament after Pakistan who is already eliminated.

With no games left, they have to rely on the results of team India and England. Team India is playing South Africa in their last match and England is playing Bangladesh in their last match. West Indies must pray that either or both of these 2 teams lose their final league match so that West Indies can qualify for the Semi-Finals.

England had a horror start to their world cup campaign as they lost their first 3 games in close margins. They fell into a must-win situation as they had to win their last four matches to make it to the Semis.

They’ve managed to beat India, New Zealand, and Pakistan earning them 6 points. With the newcomers Bangladesh in the last match, England has a big chance of finishing up at no.3 as they have a slightly better NRR than team India. All they have to do is to make sure they beat Bangladesh comprehensively and they’ll be through to the Semis with 8 points on the board.

India:

Team India has had a bumpy run in the world cup so far. They’ve been excellent in some games and terrible in some. They managed to win matches against Bangladesh, West Indies, and Pakistan who are slightly on the weaker side. But, they were decimated by Australia, England, and New Zealand who are relatively stronger. The bowling has been good. Whereas, the batting has been inconsistent so far in their campaign.

With the final match being against South Africa on Sunday at Christchurch, team India must bring out their A-game against the 2nd best team in the tournament in South Africa and must win the match. The team will have an idea to tackle the South African unit as they defeated them in the warm-up match a month ago.

The scenario is pretty simple for team India. As they have a positive NRR, they just have to win against South Africa and they’ll be through to the Semi-Finals. If they want to finish at no.3, they’ve to win the match against South Africa by a big margin.

Overall, with all scenarios taken into consideration, team India and England can easily qualify to the Semi-Finals with 8 points on the board if they win their respective games. The position of no.3 or no.4 will be determined based on the Net Run Rate. If either of the teams loses, West Indies will qualify at no.4. If both England and India lose their final match, West Indies will qualify at no.3 and the team with a better NRR between India and England will qualify as the 4th team.

Let us see who will make the cut.
