The countdown has begun for the highly anticipated Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 Auction, scheduled for December 15 in Bengaluru.
As the WPL continues to establish itself as a premier T20 competition, this auction is poised to add another layer of excitement, with teams striving to secure top international stars and emerging domestic talents. A total of 120 players will go under the hammer, including 91 Indian players and 29 overseas cricketers, along with three from Associate Nations.’
The pool is packed with a mix of experience and untapped potential, featuring 82 uncapped Indian players and 8 uncapped overseas cricketers, making the auction even more intriguing.
The five WPL franchises—Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and UP Warriorz—have 19 vacant slots to fill, five of which are reserved for overseas players. Each team enters the auction with different needs and purse sizes, setting the stage for strategic bidding wars.
Delhi Capitals, the runners-up in the last two editions, have the smallest purse of INR 2.5 Cr. They are looking to fill four slots, with three Indian players and one overseas player on their radar. Gujarat Giants, with the highest purse of INR 4.4 Cr, have a significant advantage. After parting ways with India’s Sneh Rana, they are looking to fill two overseas slots and two Indian ones.
Mumbai Indians, the inaugural champions, have INR 2.65 Cr at their disposal and will focus on acquiring three Indian players and one overseas player. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the defending champions, enter with INR 3.25 Cr but no overseas slots available, so their focus will be solely on securing four Indian players. UP Warriorz, with INR 3.9 Cr to spend, need to fill three slots, including one overseas player and two Indians.
Gujarat Giants’ substantial purse could make them key players in the auction, while Delhi Capitals will need to be resourceful with their smaller budget. Each team’s strategy will revolve around acquiring game-changing players to strengthen their squads and adapt to the evolving dynamics of the league.
With the WPL’s growing popularity, the 2025 season is expected to be even more competitive, and this auction will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the league.
Although the official dates for the season have not yet been confirmed, it is expected to kick off in February. Fans can expect a thrilling and action-packed auction day as franchises work to assemble their squads for the upcoming season, with the competition set to reach new heights.
