Jemimah Rodrigues’ maiden WPL fifty guides Delhi Capitals to 29 Run Win over Mumbai Indians

Skipper Meg Lanning, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Jess Jonassen power the Delhi Capitals to a flying start to their home leg with a comprehensive victory over Mumbai Indians.

After a cracking finish to the Bangalore leg, we now move on to the Arun Jaitley Stadium for the 2nd phase of the ongoing 2nd edition of the WPL. The eliminator and the final will be hosted at the same venue. The Delhi Capitals kickstarted their home leg with a comprehensive 29-run victory over the defending champions Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians skipper Harmanpreet Kaur returned to the side and opted to field first after winning the toss. Shabnim Ismail returned to the playing 11, alongside regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. After being inserted to bat first, Delhi Capitals posted a huge total on the board on the back of twin half-centuries from skipper Meg Lanning (53 off 38 balls) and Jemimah Rodrigues (69 off 33 balls). Her tally of runs included eight boundaries and three maximums as she scored at a humongous strike rate of 209.09.

The star Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues finally came to the party after showing ominous signs with the bat for the first few matches earlier in the tournament.

Pooja Vastrakar (4-0-20-1), and Saika Ishaque (4-0-29-1) were the top performers with the ball for Mumbai Indians.

During the course of the 1st innings, Shabnim Ismail created history when she bowled the fastest delivery (132.1 KPH) in the 3rd over of the innings, to skipper Meg Lanning.

Chasing a massive total of 193, Mumbai Indians suffered an early collapse as they lost their top order inside the powerplay. However, the lower-order fought back to stage a solid recovery but eventually ended up on the losing side by 29 runs as they were unable to take their side over the line.

The Delhi Capitals led by skipper Meg Lanning became the first team to defend a total successfully against Mumbai Indians in the history of the Women’s Premier League as they kickstarted their home leg on a high. Jemimah Rodrigues was awarded the Player of the Match for her outstanding performance (69 off 33 balls) with the bat.

Apart from her outstanding innings with the bat, she was also exceptional in the field for the Delhi Capitals last night.
