Chamodi Praboda and Aseni Thalagune’s 3-Fers Crush England U19 Women as Sri Lanka Win by 52 Runs

Sri Lanka, led by skipper Chamodi Praboda, were up against England, led by skipper Bryony Gillgrass, on 17th April 2026, at the Ian Healy Oval, in the 2nd game of the Under-19 Tri-series.

In the Under-19 Tri-series opener Down Under, the Tegan Williamson-led Australia defeated England by 6 wickets on 6th April 2026.

The Sri Lankan skipper Chamodi Praboda won the toss and opted to bat first. The Sri Lankan opening batter Vimoksha Balasuriya departed for a duck in the 2nd over of the innings. Bea Willis provided the first breakthrough for England. The Lankans were quickly reduced to 31/3 in the 9th over of the innings. Danodya Sewmini joined Limansa Thilakarthne at the crease, and the duo led the recovery with a much-needed 42-run partnership for the 4th wicket.

Prarthana Reddy broke the stand by sending Danodya Sewmini (11 off 22 balls) back to the pavilion in the 19th over of the innings, providing the crucial 4th breakthrough for England. Shashini Gimhani joined Limansa Thilakarthne at the crease, and the duo stitched another crucial 56-run partnership for the 5th wicket, which also took them past the 120-run mark. Trudy Johnson got the big scalp of Limansa Thilakarathne in the 31st over, to provide the much-needed 5th breakthrough for her side. Limansa Thilakarathne (51 off 85 balls) scored a fighting half-century before getting dismissed.

Sri Lanka suffered a horrible collapse as they lost their last five wickets for just 41 runs. As a result, they were bundled out for just 170 in 42.4 overs. Shashini Gimhani (39 off 50 balls) chipped in with a handy contribution, alongside Sanjana Kavindi (12 off 23 balls). The England bowlers were ill-disciplined, conceding as many as 29 runs in extras, for which they eventually paid a heavy price for it.

Trudy Johson (8.4-2-9-4) was the stand-out performer with the ball for England, with Maria Andrews (10-1-23-2), Bea Willis (8-0-40-2), and Prarthana Reddy (1-0-11-1) playing their part with the ball.

Chasing a target of 171, the England openers Amelia Oliver (15 off 16 balls) and Mollie Adams (4 off 14 balls) got their side off to a steady start with a 21-run opening stand. England lost both their openers in quick succession in a space of a couple of deliveries. The breakthroughs also went on to trigger a collapse as England were quickly reduced to 41/6 in the 17th over of the run chase, losing their next four wickets for just 20 runs.

Trudy Johnson joined skipper Bryony Gillgrass at the crease, and the pair tried their best to keep Sri Lankan bowlers at bay with a gritty 34-run partnership for the 7th wicket. Pramudi Methsara broke the stand by sending Trudy Johnson back to the pavilion in the 30th over of the run chase, providing the much-needed 7th breakthrough for Sri Lanka.

Maria Andrews joined skipper Bryony Gillgrass at the crease, and the duo took the innings deeper with another crucial 22-run partnership for the 8th wicket, which also took them closer to the 100-run mark. England were eventually bundled out for 118, in the 43rd over of the run chase, falling 52 runs short of the target. Bea Willis (20* off 20 balls), skipper Bryony Gillgrass (35 off 60 balls), and Shristi Patil (11 off 26 balls) chipped in with crucial contributions with the bat for England. The innings had 12 extras.

Skipper Chamodi Praboda (10-4-13-3) and Aseni Thalagune (9.1-6-11-3) were exceptional with the ball for Sri Lanka. Pramudi Methsara (5-1-13-1), Shashini Gimhani (9-2-35-1), and Danodya Sewmini (3-0-19-1) played their part with the ball. England suffered their 2nd straight defeat in the ongoing Tri-series.
