“India are the front-runner in UAE Conditions” – Jess Jonassen

Australia has announced their squad for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this October. One of the most surprising omissions is Jess Jonassen, a veteran with more than a decade of international experience. Despite her absence from the squad, Jonassen shared her thoughts on the competition.

Speaking on India’s chances, Jonassen was clear in her assessment that they could be the team to beat this time around, particularly given their familiarity with the UAE conditions. “India are well and truly the front-runner because of the depth and versatility that they have. They have better knowledge of UAE conditions. We have never played there, but Australia knows how to play in big tournaments and can’t be underestimated,” Jonassen said.

India are yet to win the Women’s T20 World Cup, having reached the final only once, in 2020. But with their rising talent pool and stronger all-around unit, they seem poised for a serious challenge. Despite India’s strong position, Jonassen reminded everyone not to discount Australia’s experience and success. Australia, after all, has claimed the trophy a record seven times.

Jonassen also acknowledged the challenge ahead for Australia due to their limited experience playing in the UAE, a sentiment echoed by Australian captain Alyssa Healy. While Healy said she was excited for the unfamiliar conditions, Jonassen admitted that the Aussies would need to be at their absolute best if they hope to retain the title.

“We have played in different subcontinent pitches and conditions, but have little knowledge about UAE conditions, so it will be challenging. We’ve been under another illusion that the pool that we are in is not one of the toughest. But I don’t think there’s going to be a single easy game,” Jonassen added.

Jonassen’s absence from the squad comes after an underwhelming performance in her last T20I appearance in October 2023 against the West Indies, where she conceded 34 runs in just two overs. This marks only the second time she has missed a major ICC tournament since her international debut in 2012, the first being the 2013 ICC ODI World Cup.

Nevertheless, her domestic form has been impressive, including her standout performances in the WBBL and WPL. Jonassen picked up 24 wickets for Brisbane Heat in the WBBL and 11 wickets for Delhi Capitals in the WPL earlier this year.

Australia’s journey toward their fourth consecutive T20 World Cup title begins with their opening match against Sri Lanka, captained by Chamari Athapaththu, on October 5 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. They will also face tough competition from India, Pakistan, and New Zealand in the group stages, as they aim to defend their title and cement their dominance in women’s cricket.
