Lauren Cheatle’s 3/25 and 46 Send Sydney Sixers Into Final

The Sydney Sixers held their nerve in a nail-biting encounter to claim a four-wicket victory over crosstown rivals Sydney Thunder in Semi-Final 2 of the T20 Spring Challenge at Cricket Central. After being sent in to bat, the Thunder posted a competitive 152/9 in their 20 overs, headlined by a blistering half-century down the order. In response, the Sixers weathered a few tense middle-over wobbles before pacing their run-chase smartly, sealing victory at 153/6 with three balls remaining in the 20th over to secure their ticket to the tournament final.

The Thunder got off to a disastrous start in the powerplay as Lauren Cheatle wreaked havoc with the new ball, removing Emily Powell (6), Anika Learoyd (0), and Tahlia Wilson (10) in rapid succession to leave the Thunder reeling at 21/3. Heather Knight steadied the ship temporarily with a steady 27 off 27 balls, but her run-out derailed the rebuilding effort. Entering at 65/6, Laura Harris completely shifted the momentum of the innings with a brutal counter-attack, smashing a sensational 63 off just 24 deliveries packed with 10 fours and three massive sixes. Her explosive enterprise carried the Thunder past the 150 mark before they closed at 152/9.

Cheatle was the bowler of the day for the Sixers, setting the initial standard with brilliant figures of 3/25 in her four overs. Veteran campaigner Sarah Coyte provided excellent support at the back end, picking up 2/22, while Courtney Grace Sippel (1/20), Maitlan Brown (1/35), and Juliette Morton (1/6) all chipped in to keep the boundaries under check outside of the Harris storm. Their collective discipline ultimately proved vital in keeping the run target manageable on a good batting surface.

Chasing 153 for a place in the summit clash, the Sixers came out flying in the powerplay, led by Lauren Kua’s aggressive 35 off 19 balls containing four boundaries and a six. Elsa Hunter provided solid company with a measured 22 off 24 balls. However, off-spinner Jemma Barsby turned the game on its head with a double-strike in the 6th over, removing Kua and dangerous middle-order batter Erin Burns for a golden duck. Barsby went on to finish with standout figures of 3/33, leaving the match on a knife-edge as the Sixers found themselves needing a steadying hand.

Left-arm bowler Lauren Cheatle capably stepped up with the bat when her side needed her most, playing a match-winning, unbeaten knock of 46 off 41 balls. Paired with Sarah Coyte, who smashed a crucial 16 off just 8 balls at a strike rate of 200, the pair absorbed the late pressure seamlessly. Coyte sealed the game with back-to-back boundaries off Nicola Hancock (2/17) in the final over, completing a memorable victory and setting up a marquee final against the Perth Scorchers.

This thrilling derby victory not only earns the Sixers ultimate bragging rights in Sydney but also sets the stage for a blockbuster final against the Perth Scorchers, where both teams will look to carry their rich vein of form into the championship clash.
