Essex Women produced a commanding batting display to chase down a competitive target and secure a convincing nine-wicket victory over Surrey Women in the 40th Match of the Women’s T20 Blast 2026 at County Ground, Chelmsford. After electing to field first, Essex’s bowlers managed to restrict Surrey despite a couple of impactful partnerships, before their top order made light work of the 185-run target, reaching 185/1 in just 19.1 overs. The chase was built around magnificent innings from Anneke Bosch and captain Grace Scrivens, with Jodi Grewcock providing the finishing touches in an impressive all-round performance.

Surrey Women’s innings began positively as captain Bryony Smith and Kira Chathli looked to make full use of the powerplay. The opening pair added 30 runs for the first wicket, laying a brisk platform before Sophia Smale struck with the breakthrough. Chathli played an aggressive hand of 12 from 9 balls, striking 2 boundaries at a strike rate of 133.33, but her dismissal in the fourth over halted Surrey’s early momentum. Essex’s bowlers maintained disciplined lines, preventing Surrey from fully capitalising despite the promising start.
Bryony Smith continued to anchor the innings and found brief support from Laura Harris, although the partnership lasted only one run before Eva Gray removed Harris for 1 off 2 balls. Surrey slipped to 31/2, giving Essex further control. Smith, however, continued to counterattack with confidence, piercing the gaps regularly and ensuring the scoreboard kept moving. She struck 9 fours during an entertaining knock of 53 from just 43 deliveries, maintaining a strike rate of 123.25, before becoming Kate Coppack’s only wicket of the evening. Smith’s dismissal at 113/3 in the 13.1st over left Surrey needing a strong finish.
The middle and death overs belonged largely to Jemima Spence and Phoebe Franklin, whose partnership transformed Surrey’s innings. The pair added an important 37 runs for the fourth wicket, blending sensible rotation with calculated boundary hitting. Franklin contributed 13 off 10 balls, including 2 fours, before becoming Sophia Smale’s second victim with the total at 150/4 in the 16.3rd over. Her cameo ensured Surrey maintained momentum heading into the closing overs while Spence assumed the role of chief aggressor.
Following Franklin’s dismissal, Jemima Spence combined with Alice Monaghan in an unbeaten 34-run fifth-wicket partnership, giving Surrey an excellent finish. Spence played one of the finest innings of the match, remaining unbeaten on 69 from only 41 balls, smashing 9 boundaries and scoring at a blistering strike rate of 168.29. Monaghan provided ideal support with an unbeaten 29 off 16 deliveries, striking 4 fours at an impressive strike rate of 181.25. Surrey collected 7 extras to finish with a competitive 184/4 in their 20 overs, scoring at 9.20 runs per over.
Essex’s bowling effort was a collective one despite the challenging batting conditions. Sophia Smale emerged as the standout performer, claiming 2 wickets for 28 runs from her four overs, dismissing both Kira Chathli and Phoebe Franklin while maintaining an economy rate of 7.00. Kate Coppack accounted for the crucial wicket of Bryony Smith, returning figures of 1/45 from four overs. Eva Gray chipped in with the wicket of Laura Harris and finished with 1/37 from four overs. Sophie Munro bowled economically by comparison with 0/29 from four overs, while Jodi Grewcock conceded 20 runs in her two overs, and Grace Scrivens completed two overs for 22 runs without success.
Needing 185 for victory, Essex Women made an aggressive start that immediately put Surrey’s bowlers under pressure. Captain Grace Scrivens and Anneke Bosch displayed excellent intent from the outset, timing the ball beautifully and punishing anything loose. The opening stand was 96 runs, with the first wicket falling at 96/1 in the 9.5th over. Their 96-run opening partnership came in less than ten overs and completely shifted the contest in Essex’s favour. Scrivens was the aggressor early, racing to 47 from 30 balls, smashing 9 fours at a strike rate of 156.66, before being run out by Laura Harris.
Despite losing their captain, Essex never lost control of the chase. Anneke Bosch seamlessly took charge alongside Jodi Grewcock, and the pair ensured there were no further hiccups. Bosch delivered a batting masterclass, remaining unbeaten on 84 from 54 deliveries, striking 13 fours while maintaining a strike rate of 155.55. Grewcock complemented her perfectly with an unbeaten 47 off 32 balls, hitting 7 boundaries at a strike rate of 146.87. Together they stitched an unbroken 89-run second-wicket partnership, calmly steering Essex to 185/1 in 19.1 overs at a run rate of 9.65, sealing victory with five balls remaining.
Surrey’s bowling attack struggled to contain Essex’s relentless batting. Priyanaz Chatterji leaked 44 runs from 3 overs. Ryana MacDonald-Gay delivered four overs for 33 runs, while Kalae Moore returned figures of 0/23 from 3 overs, producing one of the more economical spells. Danielle Gregory conceded 27 runs in her four overs, and Laura Harris bowled 3.1 overs for 27 runs. Alice Monaghan gave away 17 runs in her only over, while Alice Davidson-Richards conceded 13 runs from her single over. However, none of the bowlers could consistently break Essex’s partnerships or halt their momentum during the chase.
