New Zealand opener, Suzie Bates made history on Monday, March 7th against Bangladesh in the 2022 World Cup as she crossed 1000 runs in World Cup history becoming the 2nd Kiwi Batter to reach the milestone after Debbie Hockley who scored 1501 runs in World Cup which still stands no.1 in the most runs in World Cup category.
The Kiwi opener has been a huge part of the New Zealand side since 2006. In her 15 years long career, Suzie has scored 4872 runs in 131 ODIs at an average of 41 with 11 centuries and 28 half-centuries. She has a great home and away performance scoring 2121 runs and 1645 runs in home and away respectively. She has scored 1100 runs in 31 innings against Australia, 822 runs in 34 innings against England, and 712 runs in 21 innings against India. Her 168 against Pakistan in 2009 is her best score. During her captaincy stint from 2011 to 2018, she scored 3214 runs in 72 matches at a superb average of 51.83.
The New Zealand batter had consistently scored 400+ ODI runs from 2015 to 2019. She saw a drop in 2020 and 2021 scoring just 200 runs. She has comeback strong in 2022 as she has scored 185 runs in a 5 match ODI series against India coming into the World Cup.
She didn’t get the best of starts against the West Indies. But, she came back strong against Bangladesh in the 2nd match scoring an unbeaten 79 of 68 balls with 8 boundaries helping New Zealand register a big 8 wicket victory. She will be key factor for New Zealand going forward in the tournament.
