Sri Lanka registered a thrilling 3-wicket win over Pakistan in the semi-final of the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup, chasing a total of 141. Following the win, Sri Lankan fans celebrated as their team secured a spot in the final against India.
The toss went in Chamari Athapaththu’s favor, and she decided to bowl first. Asked to bat first, Pakistan managed a good start with an opening stand of 61. Muneeba Ali was Pakistan’s top scorer with 37 runs, while Udeshika Prabodhani was Sri Lanka’s leading wicket-taker, finishing with figures of 2 for 23 in four overs. Pakistan set a target of 141 for the Islanders.
Chasing the total, the hosts didn’t get off to a good start and were 19 for 2 at one stage. Chamari Athapaththu was Sri Lanka’s top scorer with 63 off 48 balls. Though Sadia Iqbal’s 4-fer went in vain, she was Pakistan’s top bowler, finishing with figures of 4 for 16 in four overs, including the wicket of the Lankan skipper. Chamari Athapaththu was rewarded player of the match, her third consecutive in the ongoing edition of the Women’s Asia Cup.
Following the nail-biting final-ball finish, fans from both teams reacted on the social media platform ‘X,’ formerly known as Twitter. While Sri Lankan fans acknowledged the effort of Chamari Athapaththu’s knock, Pakistan fans appreciated the effort of Sadia Iqbal, who took the match to the end.
