Spinners dominate before openers Vishmi Gunaratne and skipper Chamari Athapaththu make light work of the run chase to take Sri Lanka into the semis of the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup

Bangladesh led by skipper Nigar Sultana Joty sealed a thumping 114-run victory in the 11th match of the tournament against Malaysia led by skipper Winifred Duraisingam.

Sri Lanka led by skipper Chamari Athapaththu was all set to face Thailand led by skipper Thipatcha Putthawong in the 12th match of the tournament. Thailand skipper Thipatcha Putthawong won the toss and opted to bat first. Thailand got off to a poor start as they lost the wicket of Nattaya Boochatham on the first ball of the innings. Achini Kulasuriya provided the first breakthrough for Sri Lanka.

Wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai joined Aphisara Suwanchonrathi at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 16-run partnership for the 2nd wicket. Inoshi Priyadharshani Fernando picked up the wicket of Aphisara Suwanchonrathi to provide the 2nd breakthrough for her side.

Phannita Maya joined Wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai at the crease and the duo stitched another crucial 22-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to lead some sort of recovery for Thailand. Thailand suffered a horrible collapse as they lost their next four wickets for just 43 runs. Thailand eventually ended up with a total of 93/7 in their quota of overs.

The 28-run 7th wicket partnership between skipper Thipatcha Putthawong and Wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai played a crucial role in helping their side get closer to the 100-run mark. Nannapat Koncharoenkai (47 off 53 balls), skipper Thipatcha Putthawong (13 off 17 balls), and Aphisara Suwanchonrathi (12 off 9 balls) were the top performers with the bat for Thailand.

Kavisha Dilhari (4-0-13-2), Inoshi Priyadharshani (3-0-10-1), Sugandika Kumari (4-0-22-1), and Chamari Athapaththu (3-0-15-1) were the top performers with the ball for Sri Lanka. Chasing a target of 94, the Sri Lankan openers Vishmi Gunaratne and skipper Chamari Athapaththu cruised through the run chase with 10 wickets in hand and 51 balls to spare.

Skipper Chamari Athapaththu (49 off 35 balls), and Vishmi Gunaratne (39 off 34 balls) were the top performers with the bat for Sri Lanka. Thipatcha Putthawong (2-0-10-0), and Chanida Sutthiruang (3-0-18-0) were the top performers with the ball for Thailand. Skipper Chamari Athapathu was awarded the Player of the Match for her match-winning performance (49 off 35 balls), with the bat and (3-0-15-1) with the ball.

Sri Lanka officially progresses to the semi-final of the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024. They will face Pakistan in the 2nd semi-final.
