Before match 10 of the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup between India and Nepal, Smriti Mandhana stepped out as the Indian women’s team captain for the toss, revealing that Harmanpreet Kaur was rested for this match.
This ninth edition of the tournament, from July 19 to July 28, 2024, in Sri Lanka, features eight teams and is being played in the T20 format in preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup. India is placed in Group A alongside Nepal, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Pakistan.
Mandhana has previously captained India’s T20Is teams, first taking on the role on March 4, 2019, against England during their tour of India in Guwahati. However, India lost that match by 41 runs. Her record as captain includes 13 matches, with 7 wins, 5 losses, and 1 no result.
In-form right-arm medium bowler Pooja Vastrakar has also been rested. Post the 2024 edition of the Women’s Premier League in March, India first took the field against Bangladesh for a 5-match T20I series in April-May and on that tour, Pooja featured in all games. She then featured in all 7 games, including a Test, of the multi-format against South Africa in June-July and following two appearances in the ongoing 09 edition of the Asia Cup, she has received a deserving rest after a long run.
The India v Nepal match update is that India has won the toss and decided to bat first against Nepal.
