Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh’s half-centuries powers India to a thumping victory against UAE

We witnessed comprehensive victories on the 2nd day of ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024. Thailand defeated Malaysia by 22 runs in the 3rd match of the tournament. Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets in the 4th match of the tournament.

The United Arab Emirates skipper Esha Oza won the toss and opted to field first. UAE continued with the same side. India on the other hand, had a forced change as the debutant Tanuja Kanwer replaced injured Shreyanka Patil in the playing 11. The 26-year-old left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwer only became the 2nd Indian to make her International debut in the Women’s Asia Cup.

After being inserted to bat first, the Indian openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana got their side off to a flying start, scoring over 11 runs an over. Kavisha Egodage picked up the wicket of Smriti Mandhana to provide the first breakthrough for the UAE. Dayalan Hemalatha joined Shafali Verma at the crease and the duo stitched a crucial 29-run partnership for the 2nd wicket, taking India past the 50-run mark in five overs.

India lost two wickets in two balls to bring UAE back into the game after a flying start by the Indian top-order. Jemimah Rodrigues joined skipper Harmanpreet Kaur at the crease and the duo stitched a crucial 54-run partnership for the 4th wicket to lead a decent recovery and bring the momentum back in the innings. Kavisha Egodage came back and picked up the wicket of Jemimah Rodrigues to provide the 4th breakthrough for her side.

Wicket-keeper batter Richa Ghosh joined skipper Harmanpreeet Kaur at the crease and the duo carried the momentum ahead in the innings. The wicket-keeper batter Richa Ghosh took the opposition bowlers to the cleaners with a counter-attacking innings. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur joined the party towards the end to provide a blockbuster finish. India posted a massive total of 201/5 in their quota of overs. It is India’s highest-ever total in the T20I format. It is also the record-highest total in the history of the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup.

Richa Ghosh (64 off 29 balls), skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (66 off 47 balls), and Shafali Verma (37 off 18 balls) were the top performers with the bat for India. Kavisha Egodage (4-0-36-2), Heena Hotchandani (4-0-40-1), and Samaira Dharnidharka (4-0-42-1) were the top performers with the ball for the UAE.

Chasing a mammoth target of 202, the UAE openers wicket-keeper batter Theertha Satish and skipper Esha Oza got off to a very cautious start. Renuka Singh picked up the wicket of the wicket-keeper batter Theertha Satish to provide the first breakthrough for India. UAE lost a couple of wickets in quick succession and found themselves in trouble at 36/3 in the 8th over of the run chase.

Khushi Sharma joined Kavisha Egodage at the crease and the duo stitched another crucial 19-run partnership for the 5th wicket. Radha Yadav picked up the wicket of Khushi Sharma to provide the 5th breakthrough for India. UAE was eventually restricted to 123/7, falling short of the target by 78 runs.

Kavisha Egodage (40 off 32 balls), skipper Esha Oza (38 off 36 balls), and Khushi Sharma (10 off 13 balls) were the top performers with the bat for the UAE. Deepti Sharma (4-0-23-2), Tanuja Kanwer (4-0-14-1), Pooja Vastrakar (4-1-27-1), and Radha Yadav (4-0-29-1) were the top performers with the ball. Every Indian bowler was amongst the wickets. Wicket-keeper batter Richa Ghosh was awarded the Player of the Match for her power-packed performance (64 off 29 balls), apart from her exploits with the bat, she was also involved in one stumping and one run-out with the gloves in hand.
