Richa Ghosh becomes first Indian wicket-keeper batter to hit Fifty in Asia Cup

During the 5th match of the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Richa Ghosh scored her maiden T20 International (T20I) fifty. This ninth edition of the tournament, held from July 19 to July 28, 2024, in Sri Lanka, features eight teams and is being played in the T20 format in preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup. India is placed in Group A alongside Nepal, the UAE, and Pakistan.

Ghosh made her T20I debut for India on February 12, 2020, against Australia during the Australia Tri-Nation Women’s T20 Series in Melbourne. In her 52 T20I appearances, she has accumulated 824 runs and made 46 dismissals as a wicketkeeper.

In the match against the UAE, after losing the toss, India was asked to bat first. They had an aggressive start but lost wickets in a cluster, posting 56 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in the powerplay.

Ghosh came in at 11.5 overs when India was at 106/4. She played aggressively, scoring an unbeaten 64 runs off 29 balls, including 12 boundaries and 1 six, with a strike rate of 220.68. Her partnership with captain Harmanpreet Kaur helped India post 201/5, marking the highest score in the Women’s T20 Asia Cup and India’s highest in Women’s T20Is.

Ghosh became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score a fifty in the Women’s T20 Asia Cup and the third overall. Her 64* is also the highest score by any wicketkeeper in the tournament’s history.
