With Alyssa Healy and Ashleigh Gardner (calf strain) forced to sit out of the Sydney Cricket Ground encounter, Australia has suffered a double injury blow ahead of the opening Ashes T20I.

In a landmark moment in her promising cricket career, 21-year-old Georgia Voll became the first Australian to debut in this format since 2022, stepping in after Healy’s recent knee issue. Voll has earned her place in the national team courtesy of her reliable domestic cricket performances.
For a long time, Voll’s focus was on rugby league, but she discovered cricket because there weren’t many alternatives for girls above the under-12 level. She briefly balanced both, but when the Covid-19 pandemic struck and she had her first state cricket contract, the decision was clear.
Just before Monday’s toss, Phoebe Litchfield gave Voll her T20I cap, which she gained in addition to her ODI cap from Brisbane last month, where she scored a century in her second game against India. Australia swept India 3-0 after she had an outstanding debut of 46 not out at almost a run-a-ball, 101 off 87 in her second game, and then 26.
Voll’s successful season opening the batting for Sydney Thunder in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), where she scored 330 runs at a strike rate of 144.73, prompted her call-up to Australia. With Alyssa Healy out with midfoot soreness, Voll’s debut comes at a critical moment. Her flexibility, which allows her to bat in a variety of positions and contribute depth in the bowling department, makes her an ideal fit to the team.
Having a strong foundation and a lot of potential, Georgia Voll’s ability to convert her domestic success into international glory will be the focus of attention as she dons the green and gold cap for her debut T20I.
