“I think my game’s ready,” Georgia Voll sent a reminder ahead of Ashes series

Georgia Voll delivered a commanding reminder of her explosive batting prowess during the rain-curtailed Governor General’s XI match against England at North Sydney Oval. The 20-year-old Queenslander smashed a blistering half-century, cementing her case for Ashes selection and underlining her immense potential as one of Australia’s next big stars.

The hosts managed 8-183 in 28.2 overs before inclement weather forced the game’s abandonment. While the match deprived Australian skipper Alyssa Healy a crucial opportunity to test her fitness ahead of the Ashes opener, it was Voll who seized the spotlight, showcasing her readiness to contribute at the highest level.

England captain Heather Knight opted to bowl first, but Voll and Healy made a statement with a sensational 91-run opening stand. Voll brought up her fifty in just 38 deliveries, flaying the English bowlers to all parts of the ground. Her knock of 57 from 42 balls was laced with powerful strokes before falling victim to Sophie Ecclestone.

Ecclestone and fellow spinner Charlie Dean turned the game on its head, triggering a collapse of 5 wickets for just 11 runs in a span of 29 balls. Ecclestone returned figures of 3 for 27 from five overs, with Dean contributing 2 for 20.

Speaking after the game, Voll reflected, “Obviously pretty disappointing with the rain around … but to get out there and spend some time in the middle was nice. It’s just about every opportunity I get, do the best I can … I’m just learning off the girls as much as I can and soaking up the experience.”

Voll’s rise to prominence began with a sensational debut against India in December 2024, stepping up after Healy’s knee injury. After dominating the domestic circuit with knocks of 98 off 84 in the WNCL and 92 off 55 in the WBBL, she earned her place in the Australian squad.

The young opener announced herself with an unbeaten 46 in her maiden ODI, followed by a scintillating 101 off 87 balls in her second game. Her fearless stroke play and maturity at the crease helped Australia seal a 3-0 series sweep against India.

Despite her success, Voll remains grounded about her role in the national setup, “The girls literally smashed New Zealand … it’s pretty hard (to get a game) when the girls are doing so well. Obviously, I’m ready if I need to be called upon, but we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Voll’s international performances are backed by stellar domestic numbers. In the WBBL 2024, she scored 330 runs at an impressive strike rate of 144.73 for Sydney Thunder, highlighted by an unbeaten 97 off 56. In the ongoing WNCL 2024/25 season, she has amassed 201 runs in four matches, including a top score of 98.

Her transition from Brisbane Heat to Sydney Thunder in the WBBL marked a significant leap in her career, where her ability to anchor innings and accelerate at will stood out. Voll’s consistent run-scoring across formats has made her an integral part of Australia’s plans.

Although Voll was initially overlooked for Australia’s ODI tour of New Zealand, her strong performances against India ensured she retained her spot in the squad. The question remains whether she will break into the playing XI for the Ashes, given Australia’s formidable lineup.

Voll exudes quiet confidence about her readiness, “I think I’m ready. I’ve been playing domestic cricket for four or five years. I’m obviously still pretty young, so I’ve still got a lot of things to learn, but I think my game’s ready. If I’m called upon, then I think I can do a good job.”
