England opener Danni Wyatt has enjoyed a fine career, representing England on more than 250 occasions in white-ball cricket. A former beneficiary of the MCC Young Cricketers scheme, she earned a central contract when the first tranche of women’s deals was handed out in 2014 – four years after her international debut. Danielle Wyatt made her debut for England at the age of 19 against India in 2010 in an ODI match. She scored the winning runs against the mighty Indians with 28 runs off 26 balls. She is a multi-faceted cricketer who is equally good with both bat and ball in hand. The top-order batter made her T20I debut a couple of days after her ODI debut, which also came against India.
The English top-order batter has played the most T20I matches for her national side so far (2024). She was only 14 when she first played for Staffordshire in 2005. Later on, she went on to win a prestigious MCC Young Cricketers Contract, which allowed her to make cricket her full-time occupation. Then she moved to Nottinghamshire from Staffordshire in 2013 and signed for Sussex at the start of the 2016 season. In 2017, she was a part of England’s World Cup-winning squad but lost her place due to inconsistency halfway through the tournament. The first time she opened the innings was against the West Indies in the 2013 World Cup, playing a crucial knock of 40 runs. Dani has had lots of ups and downs in her career, bowling very little during 2013 to 2016 as she was working to remodel her bowling action. Surprisingly, in the 2016 T20 World Cup, she was batting at number 6, lower down the order.
One of Wyatt’s most remarkable achievements is her record in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). She has scored two centuries in T20I cricket, making her one of the few women to achieve this feat. Her first T20I century came against Australia in 2017, where she scored a scintillating 100 off just 57 balls, showcasing her ability to dismantle top-quality bowling attacks. This century was instrumental in leading England to a record chase of 178 runs. Her second century came against India in 2018, where she scored 124 runs off 64 balls, further cementing her reputation as a formidable T20I batter. She became the second player in women’s cricket to score two T20I centuries after Deandra Dottin from the West Indies.
Wyatt’s prowess isn’t limited to international cricket. She has also been a star in various franchise leagues around the world. In the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), Wyatt has been a key player for the Melbourne Renegades. Although she went unsold in the inaugural season of the WPL, she was picked by UP Warriorz in the second edition.
Dani made her Test debut in the Ashes series. Although England lost the match, it was a decent outing for her, scoring 44 and 54 in both innings. Wyatt has represented England on more than 250 occasions, aggregating over 4,700 runs and over 70 wickets to her name, earning a respected place in the world of women’s cricket.
