Brief History of Denmark Women’s National Cricket Team

The Denmark women’s national cricket team represents Denmark in international women’s cricket. Organized by the Danish Cricket Federation, Denmark is an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Historical Highlights – Denmark Women’s National Cricket Team

Denmark women’s cricket team played its first recorded international match against the Netherlands in 1983. The team made its One Day International (ODI) debut in 1989 at the Women’s European Cricket Cup, which Denmark hosted and finished as runners-up.

Denmark participated in the Women’s Cricket World Cup twice, finishing 7th in 1993 and 10th in 1997, winning a single match in each tournament.

The team last played ODI matches in 1999, after which women’s cricket in Denmark faced challenges, including a reduction in the national league to 8 players per side from the 2000 season. Denmark returned to the international competition in 2013, participating in a five-team tournament in Bologna and finishing as runners-up to Italy. In August 2014, they competed in a 20-over tournament in Berlin, finishing fifth after winning two matches.

In April 2018, the ICC granted Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) status to all its members, enabling Denmark to play official WT20I matches. Denmark played its first WT20I against Sweden at Guttsta Wicked Cricket Ground, Kolsva, on 28 May 2022.

Women’s European Cricket Championship:

Denmark hosted the first Women’s European Championship in July 1989, finishing as runners-up. They secured the runners-up position again in the 1991 edition after losing to England. Denmark finished fourth in 1990, 1995, and third in 1999. Their last appearance in the European Championship was in 1999, after which Scotland replaced them in the tournament.

Women’s Cricket World Cup:

Denmark’s maiden Women’s Cricket World Cup appearance was in 1993, where they finished seventh, securing their only victory against the Netherlands by 30 runs. In the 1997 World Cup, Denmark was placed in Group A alongside Australia, England, South Africa, Ireland, and Pakistan. They won against Pakistan by 8 wickets but lost the other four matches, finishing fifth in the group and not advancing further. This marked their last appearance in the Women’s Cricket World Cup.
