Vishmi Gunaratne, made headlines in 2022 when she achieved a remarkable feat in Sri Lanka Girls’ cricket by scoring a quadruple century consisting of 417 runs off 128 balls while playing for Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya against Jayasiripura KV. In the 2021–22 Sri Lanka Women’s Division One Tournament, she scored an unbeaten 138 runs for Chilaw Marians Cricket Club against Sri Lanka Army Sports Club Second XI.
Gunaratne’s international career began to take shape in October 2021 when she was named in Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2021 Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier, although she did not feature in any matches. She made her Twenty20 International debut in January 2022 at the 2022 Commonwealth Games Cricket Qualifier against Scotland, contributing 8 runs. Despite missing Sri Lanka’s tour of Pakistan due to exams, Gunaratne continued to impress during the series against India in June and July 2022, achieving her WT20I high score of 45 and making her One Day International debut on July 4, 2022.
Gunaratne’s talent was further recognized when she was selected for Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she played two matches. In January 2023, she was appointed captain of the Sri Lankan squad for the 2023 ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, emerging as the team’s leading run-scorer with 134 runs at an average of 44.66. Subsequently, in February 2023, Gunaratne represented Sri Lanka in four matches at the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, contributing 60 runs to her team’s efforts.
