The Kuwait women’s national cricket team, under the name of Cricket Kuwait, represents the nation in international women’s cricket, marking its presence since the country’s affiliation with the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1998. Notably, Kuwait has emerged as a key player in women’s cricket within the Middle East, distinguishing itself among Arab nations through active participation in ACC women’s tournaments. Kuwait further solidifies its position as a trailblazer by becoming the first Arab nation to host the ACC Women’s cricket tournament among Middle Eastern nations. With a dedicated focus on nurturing talent, Kuwait now boasts a highly competitive women’s cricket team at both senior and U-19 levels.

Historical Highlights

The team’s journey in international competitions began with its debut at the 2009 ACC Women’s Twenty20 Championship in Malaysia. Although they faced initial setbacks, finishing twelfth and last overall. However, they showed improvement in subsequent editions, notably placing seventh at the 2011 tournament. In the 2013 ACC Women’s Championship, Kuwait secured a victory against Singapore but ended up ranking last among the eleven participating teams. Additionally, outside of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) tournaments, Kuwait also participated in the inaugural edition of the Gulf Cricket Council (GCC) Women’s Twenty20 Championship in 2014.

Their transition to Twenty20 International (T20I) status by the ICC in 2018 marked a significant milestone, enabling Kuwait to compete at a higher level on the global cricketing platform. Their inaugural WT20I match was against Malaysia in the 2019 ICC Women’s Qualifier Asia in Bangkok on 18 February 2019. The team’s inclusion in the 2021 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier regional group highlights their continued commitment to advancing in the sport. Their triumph in the third International Women’s Invitational Cricket Tournament in Chiang Mai, Thailand last year signifies the team’s potential for greater accomplishments on the global stage.
