Aya Stafford Set for Potential Brisbane Heat Debut as Grace Parsons Recovers from Back Injury

The Brisbane Heat could introduce three new faces in their opening clash of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2026-27 season, with Aya Stafford, Orla Prendergast and Catherine White in contention to make their debuts against the Sydney Sixers.

The game will take place at Allan Border Field, with the Heat hoping to begin their campaign on a positive note in front of their home supporters. Among the potential debutants, 16-year-old wrist-spinner Stafford is attracting particular attention as she prepares for a possible opportunity at the highest level of domestic T20 cricket.

The Brisbane Heat have received approval from the WBBL Technical Committee to bring Stafford into their squad as a Local Replacement Player for leg-spinner Grace Parsons, who is recovering from a back complaint. Under WBBL regulations, an approved Local Replacement Player must be included in the match-day twelve.

If Stafford is selected in the starting XI, she would become the youngest player to debut for Brisbane Heat since Australian fast bowler Lucy Hamilton. The teenager has already demonstrated her potential with impressive performances for Queensland, making her senior state debut against New South Wales in Sydney last month. She claimed four wickets for 25 runs in one innings and followed it up with figures of 2-34, making an immediate impact with the ball.

Stafford also brings valuable international experience despite her young age. The Brisbane State High School Year 11 student, who represents Wests in Premier cricket, has played 10 T20 Internationals for Japan. Her most recent appearance came against India during the Asian Cup in September, when she took 1-14 and scored 25 runs. She has also represented Australia at the Under-19 level, giving the Heat another exciting young prospect to consider as they prepare for the new WBBL season. Her potential inclusion could add variety to Brisbane’s bowling attack, particularly through her wrist-spin.

Meanwhile, Irish international Orla Prendergast and 19-year-old pace bowler Catherine White are also in line for their Brisbane Heat debuts. Prendergast would bring international experience and all-round versatility to the squad, while White offers another pace option. Originally from Biggenden, White is a regular in Sunshine Coast first-grade cricket and was part of the Heat setup as a Local Replacement Player last season, although she did not feature in a match. She made her maiden appearance for Queensland last month, strengthening her case for an opportunity in the WBBL. The Heat will be looking to make the most of their available resources as they begin a competitive campaign.

Brisbane’s squad also includes captain Georgia Redmayne, Lily Bassingthwaighte, Lucy Bourke, Sianna Ginger, England international Sarah Glenn, Lucy Hamilton, Grace Harris, Charli Knott, Annie O’Neil and Mikayla Wrigley. Newly signed Indian wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia will join the squad in Sydney on Saturday ahead of Brisbane’s next fixture against the Sydney Thunder at Drummoyne Oval on Sunday. The Heat will face the Sydney Sixers at Allan Border Field at 6:10 pm, with gates opening at 5 pm.

The match will be broadcast on Channel 7 and FOX SPORTS, with streaming available on Kayo. With three potential debutants and a blend of domestic and international talent, Brisbane Heat will be eager to launch their WBBL 2026-27 campaign with a strong performance.
