David Hemp Returns to Bangladesh Women as Head Coach on a 2-Year Stint

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed David Hemp as the new head coach of the Bangladesh women’s national cricket team. The 55-year-old coach will replace Sarwar Imran, who is expected to end his tenure in October after serving in the position since February 2025. Hemp will begin his two-year stint when he joins the Bangladesh squad in Brisbane for the upcoming ODI tour of Australia. His tenure will run until September 2028, while his first assignment will come with the Bangladesh squad during the ODI tour of Australia in Brisbane.

Hemp is already familiar with Bangladesh’s women’s team after previously working as the batting coach during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup Qualifier in Pakistan in 2025. He also served as batting coach during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in Nepal earlier this year. He will now return in a bigger role as head coach. His new assignment will begin when he joins the squad in Brisbane for the upcoming ODI tour of Australia. The appointment gives him another chance to continue his association with Bangladesh’s women’s cricket team.

The 55-year-old has been part of the BCB coaching structure since May 2023, when he took charge as the Head Coach of the High Performance (HP) programme. He was also assigned as the Bangladesh men’s national team batting coach in 2024. Before that appointment, he had been part of the men’s team coaching staff during the tour of New Zealand in 2023. He now moves into the head coach position with the women’s national team. His tenure in the new role will continue until September 2028. His work with the BCB has covered several coaching positions.

Hemp also brings experience from several roles in women’s cricket outside Bangladesh. He was Head Coach of the Pakistan Women’s National Team from 2020 to 2022. He also served as Head Coach of the Victoria State Women’s Team and worked as Head Coach of the Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League. These assignments gave him experience of coaching women’s teams in different cricket environments. He now returns to Bangladesh’s women’s setup after previously working with the side during qualification events. His coaching background includes roles with both national and domestic women’s teams.

His earlier involvement with Bangladesh’s women’s team came during two qualification events. Hemp served as batting coach during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup Qualifier in Pakistan in 2025 and again worked as batting coach during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in Nepal earlier this year. His appointment as head coach now gives him the chance to continue that association in a senior role. He will join the Bangladesh squad in Brisbane for the upcoming ODI tour of Australia. His two-year stint will run until September 2028, with the new role beginning during the Australia tour.

The appointment also extends Hemp’s association with the BCB, which began in May 2023 through the High Performance programme. Since then, he has worked with the HP setup, served as the Bangladesh men’s national team batting coach in 2024 and supported the women’s team during the two qualification events. Before that appointment, he had been part of the men’s team coaching staff during the tour of New Zealand in 2023. Hemp will now replace Sarwar Imran, who is expected to end his tenure in October after serving since February 2025.
