The West Indies women’s team, led by skipper Hayley Matthews, were last involved in a white-ball series that included a three-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series against the home side India led by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. The Women in Blue clinched both the series, 2-1 in the T20Is and 3-0 in the ODIs.
The Hayley Matthews-led side will now host Bangladesh for the first time for a bilateral white-ball series that will include a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series. The bilateral series will commence on 19th January 2025 and will conclude on 31st January 2025.
“This series against Bangladesh is crucial for us as we continue our campaign in the 2025 ICC 50-over Women’s Championship. The ODI series carries significant weight for our World Cup qualification hopes, while the T20I matches will provide valuable preparation as we continue to build depth in our squad,” said Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe highlighting the significance of the upcoming series against Bangladesh for the home side.
Bangladesh, led by skipper Nigar Sultana Joty, were last involved in a white-ball series that included a three-match ODI series, followed by a three-match T20I against the touring Ireland side led by skipper Gaby Lewis. Bangladesh completed a dominating whitewash (3-0) in the ODI series before getting dominated similarly by the visitors, Ireland in the T20I series (3-0). There are Women’s ODI Championship points up for grabs for both sides.
With ODI World Cup qualification at stake, the home side needs to win all their games to keep their hopes alive for a direct qualification for the upcoming ICC Women’s ODI World Cup in India in October, later this year, or else they’ll have to go through the qualifiers route.
On the other hand, Bangladesh have their fate in its own hands, and the equation is simple for them. A series win in the ODIs will ensure them a direct spot in the upcoming edition of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025.
All the matches of the series will be played at Warner Park in Basseterre. Both teams will participate in a few practice sessions before the series gets underway with ODIs from 19th January 2025 (Sunday), followed by a three-match T20I series from 27th January 2025.
