Smriti Mandhana’s RCB Enter WPL 2027 Auction with INR 1.15 Crore and Five Slots to Fill

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) head into the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2027 auction as defending champions with a settled core, a proven leader in Smriti Mandhana and ₹1.15 crore remaining to strengthen the squad with five additions, including up to two overseas players. Having retained the nucleus of their 2026 title-winning campaign while releasing Grace Harris, Linsey Smith, Dayalan Hemalatha and Gautami Nayak, RCB’s primary focus in the mini auction will be to rebuild their top-order depth and add a reliable left-arm spin option.

The fifth edition of the Women’s Premier League will be played from 14 January to 7 February 2027, with the auction scheduled for 28 October in Kochi. RCB enter the event with significant momentum after defeating Delhi Capitals by six wickets in the final at Vadodara on 5 February 2026. Led by Mandhana, they topped the league-stage points table with 12 points from eight matches, recording six victories and two defeats before securing a direct place in the final.

A champion core to build around

Mandhana remains the centrepiece of RCB’s batting plans. The skipper led from the front in 2026, finishing as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 377 runs at a strike rate of 153.25 and an average of 53.85 in nine innings. Her three half-centuries provided the consistency and tempo that shaped RCB’s successful campaign.

Nadine de Klerk was equally influential with the ball. The South African all-rounder claimed 16 wickets at an average of 15.68 and an economy rate of 7.84, finishing as RCB’s leading wicket-taker and the second-highest wicket-taker overall. Her two four-wicket hauls underlined her value, while she also contributed 133 runs at a strike rate of 138.54 and an average of 44.33, including an unbeaten half-century. With de Klerk offering balance and Mandhana anchoring the batting, RCB are unlikely to make wholesale changes. Their challenge is to address specific gaps without disturbing a combination that delivered their second WPL title.

Top-order reinforcements are the priority

The departures of Harris, Hemalatha and Gautami Nayak have created a notable void at the top and in the batting depth. RCB will therefore be expected to pursue an aggressive top-order option who can either partner Mandhana or provide cover for the middle order.

England’s 20-year-old Davina Perrin could be an intriguing target. Known for her fearless approach, Perrin has represented Northern Superchargers, now Sunrisers Leeds, in the 2024 and 2025 editions before moving to Birmingham Phoenix in 2026. Across 21 matches, she has scored 404 runs at a strike rate of 119.52 and an average of 20.20, including two half-centuries and a century.

Her wider experience also adds to her appeal. Perrin scored 48 runs at a strike rate of 111.62 for Melbourne Renegades in the 2026 WBBL and was part of England’s squads at the first two ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cups. In the 2025 edition, she finished as England’s leading run-scorer and the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer, making 176 runs at a strike rate of 135.38 and an average of 35.20.

India’s Shweta Sehrawat could represent a more developmental but potentially high-value investment. The 22-year-old was the leading run-scorer in India’s title-winning 2023 Under-19 World Cup campaign, collecting 297 runs at a strike rate of 139.43 and an average of 99, including three half-centuries. Although her WPL returns, 307 runs at a strike rate of 103.02 and an average of 12.28 in 30 matches, have been modest, her long-term upside and top-order experience make her a compelling option.

Kiran Navgire may offer a more experienced alternative. The 32-year-old can bat in both the top and middle order and has scored 435 runs at a strike rate of 134.67, with three half-centuries, in 31 WPL matches for the UP Warriorz. However, her average of 14.50 reflects an inconsistency that RCB would need to weigh against her power-hitting ability.

Filling the left-arm spin gap

Linsey Smith’s release has opened a specialist slot that could be filled by Sophie Molineux. The 28-year-old Australian captain is already familiar with the RCB environment and played a decisive role in the franchise’s 2024 title triumph. She claimed 12 wickets at an average of 23.16 and an economy rate of 7.31, while her spell of 4-0-20-3 against Delhi Capitals in the final earned her the Player of the Match award. Molineux also scored 78 runs during that campaign and would give RCB a left-arm spin option, lower-order batting depth and overseas experience. Her return could be particularly valuable if the franchise wants a proven replacement rather than another developmental signing.

Among the Indian alternatives, Parunika Sisodia stands out. A member of India’s 2025 Under-19 World Cup-winning team, she claimed 10 wickets at an average of 5.80 and an economy rate of 2.71. Mannat Kashyap is another possibility after taking nine wickets at an average of 10.33 and an economy rate of 4.65 during India’s 2023 Under-19 title-winning campaign. She has also represented India at the senior level, making her ODI debut against Australia on 2 January 2024.

A calculated auction strategy

Ellyse Perry’s return after missing the 2026 season for personal reasons gives RCB an additional boost and could reduce the pressure on their overseas recruitment. With only ₹1.15 crore available for five players, they will need to balance immediate impact with squad depth. The ideal plan would be to secure one top-order batter, add a left-arm spinner and use the remaining slots on flexible domestic players. Perrin offers attacking potential, Sehrawat provides long-term upside, Navgire brings experience, while Molineux would restore a proven tactical dimension.

RCB’s retention strategy suggests that they are not rebuilding; they are refining. After winning two of the last four editions and becoming the 2nd team after Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians with 2 WPL titles, the Smriti Mandhana-led side will enter the Kochi auction seeking not star power for its own sake, but the specific pieces required to sustain a champion’s standards.
