New South Wales Breakers begin their 2026–27 Women’s National Cricket League campaign with unfinished business, renewed depth and a point to prove. After dominating the previous edition before suffering a seven-run defeat to Queensland Fire in the rain-affected final on 21 March 2026 at Cricket Central, Sydney, the Breakers will open the new season against the reigning champions at the same venue on 29 September from 5:30 AM IST.
The tournament runs from 29 September 2026 to 20 March 2027, and the opening-round rematch immediately places NSW’s title ambitions under the spotlight. Led by Lauren Cheatle, the Breakers finished the 2025–26 league stage at the top of the table with 49 points from 12 matches, winning 11 games and losing only once, against South Australia. Their commanding campaign made them strong favourites for back-to-back titles, but Queensland, captained by Georgia Redmayne, held their nerve when it mattered most.
NSW’s season was driven by outstanding individual contributions. Katie Mack finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, accumulating 659 runs at a strike rate of 89.53 and an average of 59.90 across 13 innings. She recorded six half-centuries in 13 matches, providing the consistency and tempo that powered the Breakers’ remarkable regular-season run.
With the ball, Cheatle was equally influential. The skipper claimed 29 wickets at an average of 15.68 and an economy rate of 3.96 in 13 innings, including a four-wicket haul. She also contributed 46 runs in eight innings, underlining her value as a leader who can influence matches in both disciplines.
The Breakers will begin the new campaign without four players touring India with Australia A: Tahlia Wilson, Mack, Anika Learoyd and Frankie Nicklin. However, the availability of Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner and Phoebe Litchfield for the opening two matches gives NSW a formidable early-season core. “We’ve had a good pre-season, and the girls have worked extremely hard; we’re all ready for the games to start,” coach Peter Clarke told cricket.com.au. “I think we’re tracking pretty well, but I assume every coach, every state thinks that at this stage.”
The squad has otherwise retained a strong sense of continuity. Former Tasmania wicketkeeper-batter Emma Manix-Geeves is the only fresh full-squad arrival and provides additional batting depth as well as cover behind the stumps. Caoimhe Bray has been upgraded to a full contract after recovering from a back injury, while pace-bowling allrounder Lucy Finn joins the rookie list following a breakthrough season for NSW and Sydney Thunder. Tara French moves to the rookie list, and Eva Ragg has earned consideration after impressive performances in NSW Premier Cricket and pre-season trials.
Clarke remains focused on progress rather than simply correcting the disappointment of last season’s final. “There are always areas for improvement. Whether or not we win the thing or you come last, if you don’t improve, you fall behind,” he said.
One of the biggest stories of the campaign could be the return of Hannah Darlington, who missed the entire 2025–26 season because of a persistent leg injury and underwent surgery in March. She has resumed cricket skills training, although NSW will manage her return carefully. Bray is also expected to be closely monitored after suffering a second stress-fracture setback last season.
The Breakers’ emerging talent offers further optimism. Nicklin’s 14 wickets in eight WNCL matches last season earned her wider recognition and an Australia A opportunity, while her Green vs Gold performance, match figures of 8-44, confirmed her growing potential. “She just wants to work hard,” Clarke said. “She competes one hundred per cent of the time.”
A likely XI for the opener includes Manix-Geeves, Litchfield, Perry, Gardner, Erin Burns, Claire Moore, Bray, Finn, Sarah Coyte, Cheatle and Samantha Bates. With international stars available early and a deeper group developing behind them, NSW have the resources to challenge again. But this time, the Breakers will be judged not by their dominance before the final, but by whether they can finish the job when the pressure peaks.
