Phoebe Litchfield Explains How Honest Conversations Powered Australia’s 7th T20 World Cup Triumph

Australia’s Shane Warne-inspired celebration on the Lord’s balcony after winning the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup was the perfect ending to a journey built on honesty, hard work and learning from past disappointments.

Captain Sophie Molineux recreated Shane Warne’s famous Lord’s balcony celebration after Australia defeated England by seven wickets in the final to win their seventh Women’s T20 World Cup title. Holding a stump and pouring champagne over her head, Molineux paid tribute to the legendary spinner, who celebrated in a similar way after Australia retained the 1997 Ashes series in England.

For Australian batter Phoebe Litchfield, the moment deserves to be remembered alongside Warne’s famous celebration. “Yeah, very spontaneous (from Molineux). I actually had not really an idea of it and then seeing the pictures stacked up against each other this morning on socials,” Litchfield said. “It’s a pretty cool moment and equally iconic, I think.”

Australia were outstanding throughout the tournament. They won every match they played and defeated strong teams, including India and hosts England, to finish the competition as unbeaten champions.

Although Australia have enjoyed great success in ICC tournaments over the years, the team was disappointed after falling short in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup and finishing runners-up in the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup. Those defeats hurt a group that had become used to winning major tournaments.

Instead of ignoring those disappointments, Australia decided to face them directly. Litchfield revealed that the players, coaches and support staff held honest meetings to understand exactly what had gone wrong in those important matches. “They were led by our amazing coach (Shelley Nitschke), our support staff and then our players,” she said.

“Being able to sit in a room and talk about how and why we missed those moments and probably identifying and naming that fear or that pressure. It was there, we felt it and we weren’t able to perform.”

The team then focused on improving those areas during training. They created pressure situations in practice so the players could get used to handling those moments before they happened in real matches.

“So we did a little bit of work on that and then implemented it in training and tried to manufacture those moments or expose us to more of those moments.”

Litchfield admitted those meetings were not comfortable, but she believes they helped make the team stronger. “That was probably the idea of all that work, but yeah, those meetings were uncomfortable and credit to the girls who were there or especially, potentially, made those mistakes. It was a cool thing to be in, to own it, be honest and true – it was cool.”

Australia carried those lessons into the tournament and produced one of their best World Cup campaigns. They stayed unbeaten, reached the knockout stage with confidence and completed a comfortable chase of England’s 150 in the final to lift another world title.

Litchfield also played an important role in the final. She shared a match-winning 100-run partnership with Beth Mooney as Australia completed the chase with more than two overs remaining to seal a seven-wicket victory.

The celebrations at Lord’s showed much more than another trophy win. They reflected months of honest discussions, hard work and careful preparation that helped Australia overcome recent setbacks. Molineux’s tribute to Warne became one of the tournament’s most memorable images, while the team’s unbeaten campaign proved that learning from failure can lead to even greater success.
