England Await Nat Sciver-Brunt Scan Results After Calf Scare vs Ireland

England are hopeful captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has avoided a serious injury after feeling discomfort in her calf during their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 match against Ireland on Tuesday, June 16.

Sciver-Brunt was batting on 48* when she left the field with England close to victory in Southampton. England went on to record a four-wicket win over Ireland, making it two wins from two matches in the tournament and keeping them at the top of Group 2.

The England skipper later explained that she left the field only as a safety measure. “It was just precautionary,” Sciver-Brunt said. “I felt a bit of tightness in my calf so I thought I’d better not push it.”

Sciver-Brunt will now have a scan on Wednesday, June 17, to find out how serious the issue is. The concern is that it is the same left calf she injured while playing domestic cricket in late April. That injury forced her to miss England’s international series against New Zealand and India before returning for the World Cup warm-up matches.

Since coming back, Sciver-Brunt has looked in excellent touch. She scored a half-century against India in a warm-up game, followed it with an unbeaten 46 against Sri Lanka in England’s opening World Cup match on June 13. She then added another unbeaten 48 against Ireland.

England’s chase against Ireland was not easy. Chasing 119, they slipped to 35/3 before Sciver-Brunt and former captain Heather Knight helped steady the innings with a vital 64-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Knight scored 26 before being dismissed lbw by Ireland all-rounder Orla Prendergast, who bowled brilliantly and finished with figures of 2/17 from four overs.

A couple of overs later, Sciver-Brunt felt tightness in her calf and decided not to take any risks. She walked off with only nine runs needed from 25 balls. While the ECB described her departure as a precautionary retirement hurt, match officials officially recorded it as retired out.

Speaking after the match, Knight said there had been no sign that Sciver-Brunt was struggling before she left the field.

“I think it just happened in the moment, I felt a bit of tightness in the same calf as before, but that’s all we know,” Knight said. “Just a bit of caution from her to get herself off the field and it’ll get assessed, I’m sure, over the next few days and fingers crossed she’ll be OK.”

Knight also said that Sciver-Brunt looked calm after the game despite the injury concern.

England are hoping their captain will be available for their next Group 2 match against Scotland at Headingley on Saturday, June 20. However, the team knows it has good options if she is unable to play.

Sciver-Brunt missed England’s recent series against New Zealand and India because of the same injury. During that period, all-rounder Charlie Dean stepped in as captain and impressed with her leadership.

“We’re really hopeful that she’ll be fine, but I think one thing we have shown over the last couple of series, we’ve been able to do things really well without Nat,” Knight noted.

“I think Deano (Dean) did a brilliant job stepping into Nat’s shoes. Fingers crossed she’s all fine, but we’ll obviously cross that bridge and hope, if we have to.”

Knight also spoke about how important Sciver-Brunt is to the England side.

“She’s huge on our side,” Knight said. “Having her calmness and composure and experience to go and play like she did and, coming back from injury, I know it myself, you can be a little bit clunky and it takes a bit of time to find your rhythm.”

“I thought she did that brilliantly in the last innings at Birmingham… she’s got herself back into a brilliant old form and she’s hitting them really nicely. She brings so much in terms of her role in the batting order and her reliability and stability and things like that.”

Knight added that the decision about Saturday’s match will depend completely on the scan results. “Completely depends on the nature of her injury. Obviously, if she’s fit and fine, she’ll be desperate to play, and I think it’s important to keep building as a side. And yeah, if she’s fit, she’ll play. If she’s not fit, I guess she won’t.”

Dean is also ready if needed. “I guess I’m on standby but hopefully I won’t be needed,” she said after the match.

Dean made an important contribution against Ireland as well. She picked up 2/11 from four overs, bowled 20 dot balls, and later helped England complete the chase after Sciver-Brunt retired out and Freya Kemp was run out.

For now, England will wait for the scan results. With two wins from two matches and strong momentum in their World Cup campaign, they will be hoping their captain has avoided a major setback and can continue her fine form when England face Scotland on Saturday.
