Australia have suffered a double injury setback ahead of their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 match against Bangladesh at Headingley, Leeds, on June 17, with Phoebe Litchfield and Ashleigh Gardner both ruled out of the game.

The defending champions are coming into the match after a strong start to their campaign, having beaten South Africa by 65 runs in their opening game. However, injuries to two important players have forced Australia to make changes ahead of their second Group 1 fixture.
Phoebe Litchfield, who was one of Australia’s stars against South Africa with a quick 24-ball 50, has been ruled out after suffering an acute quad injury during that innings at Old Trafford. The injury is a new setback for the 23-year-old, who had already been dealing with some discomfort in the same leg before the tournament. Because of that issue, she missed both warm-up matches in Cardiff.
Australia expect Litchfield to miss their next three group-stage matches against Bangladesh, the Netherlands and Pakistan. The team is hopeful she could return for their much-awaited clash against India at Lord’s on June 28.
Meanwhile, vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner has also been ruled out of the Bangladesh match after picking up a sprained ankle. Gardner’s absence is another big blow for Australia, as she plays a key role with both bat and ball.
With two experienced players unavailable, Australia have had to adjust their plans. The absence of Litchfield and Gardner has also led to changes in the batting order, with senior players expected to take on greater responsibility in the coming matches.
For Australia, the biggest concern now will be the fitness of Litchfield and Gardner. Litchfield has been in excellent form and played a major role in the win over South Africa, while Gardner remains one of the team’s most valuable all-rounders.
Even with those setbacks, Australia remains among the strongest teams in the competition. However, the progress of both injuries will be closely monitored over the coming days as the defending champions continue their quest for another Women’s T20 World Cup title.
