The award recognises Kaur’s stellar contribution to Indian sport, most notably her inspirational captaincy that powered India to its maiden ICC Women’s ODI World Cup title on home soil at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

The Padma Shri crowns a landmark year for Indian women’s cricket. Under Harmanpreet’s leadership, and guided by head coach Amol Muzumdar, India lifted their first-ever senior ICC crown by defeating South Africa, captained by Laura Wolvaardt, by 52 runs in the final of the 13th ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, played across India and Sri Lanka from 30 September to 2 November 2025. The triumph made Harmanpreet the first Indian captain to lift a Women’s World Cup and only the second Indian skipper, after MS Dhoni, to win an ODI World Cup on home soil.

The winning ceremony in Navi Mumbai became a poignant bridge between eras. Mithali Raj, working as part of the tournament’s broadcast team, was handed the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup trophy by Harmanpreet, while former pace spearhead Jhulan Goswami and ex-skipper Anjum Chopra joined the celebration. All three veterans shared an emotional moment as they lifted the trophy, a symbolic tribute to the pioneers who laid the groundwork for India’s historic success.

Harmanpreet’s leadership was backed by sterling individual performances through the tournament. She finished as India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in the World Cup with 260 runs from 8 innings at an average of 32.50 and a strike rate of 89.04, including two half-centuries across nine matches. One of her standout knocks came in the semi-final against Australia, when she scored a crucial 89 off 88 balls, featuring 10 fours and two sixes, and stitched a match-defining 167-run partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues (127* off 134). That partnership proved decisive as India chased down the target to win by five wickets, with Rodrigues named Player of the Match.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s decorated career underpins why the honour is widely seen as overdue. In 164 ODIs, she has amassed 4,541 runs at an average of 37.22, including seven centuries and 24 fifties. In T20Is, she has accumulated 3,991 runs in 195 matches, with one century and 16 half-centuries. She has also played seven Tests, scoring 230 runs at an average of 23.00, including a fifty. Beyond statistics, her combative batting, tactical nous as a leader, and propensity to raise performance in big moments have been central to India’s recent rise in women’s cricket.

For 2026, Harmanpreet was one of two cricketers to receive the Padma Shri, the other being Rohit Sharma. The pair’s inclusion reflects a year in which Indian cricket captured the nation’s imagination across formats and genders.

Kaur will shift focus quickly to white-ball preparation. India begins a short tour of England with a three-match T20I series from 28 May to 2 June 2026, immediately followed by the 10th ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales from 12 June to 5 July 2026. India open the T20 World Cup against arch-rivals Pakistan at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on 14 June 2026 (7 PM IST). After the tournament, India will stay back in England for a one-off Test at Lord’s from 10–13 July 2026.

Harmanpreet’s Padma Shri is more than personal recognition; it is recognition of an inflection point for women’s cricket in India. Lifting the World Cup at home sealed India’s arrival on the biggest stage at the senior level and offered a visible payoff for decades of growth in the women’s game. The emotional involvement of former captains and bowlers in the trophy presentation underlined how this victory honours past struggles as much as present glory.

As the team looks to carry momentum into the T20 World Cup and the English summer, Harmanpreet’s award will serve both as a national accolade and as a beacon for the next generation of Indian women cricketers aspiring to follow in her footsteps.
