Em Arlott Ruled Out of England vs New Zealand ODI Series With Concussion

England’s women’s cricket team has been struck by yet another injury setback, with 28-year-old bowling all-rounder Em Arlott ruled out of the ongoing three-match ODI series against New Zealand after suffering a concussion during a training session in Durham on Saturday. The incident occurred when Arlott was hit on the head while batting, leading to a medical assessment that confirmed the diagnosis and prompted her immediate return home from the squad.

This compounds a mounting injury list for the hosts, led by stand-in skipper Charlie Dean in ODIs, as they host New Zealand, captained by Amelia Kerr, in a white-ball series running from May 10 to 25, 2026, comprising three ODIs followed by three T20Is.

The injury woes began even before the series opener. Regular captain Nat Sciver-Brunt was sidelined with a minor left calf tear, though she is expected to return for the T20I leg. Pacer Mahika Gaur will miss the ODI series due to a foot fracture, while Alice Capsey sat out the first ODI battling illness.

Adding to the drama, Issy Wong felt hamstring tightness during warm-ups and was unavailable as a precaution, with further medical assessments pending. Despite these blows, England stole a 1-0 lead in the ODI series, clinching a thrilling 1-wicket victory in a low-scoring contest at Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street.

These setbacks come at a precarious time for England, who are gearing up to host the 10th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup from June 12 to July 5, 2026, across England and Wales.

Drawn in Group 2 with Scotland, Ireland, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and the West Indies, the hosts will launch their campaign against Chamari Athapaththu-led Sri Lanka on June 12 at Edgbaston, Birmingham, starting at 11 PM IST. With key players like Arlott sidelined and others nursing niggles, stand-in leader Charlie Dean faces a stern test in balancing squad depth and momentum against a confident New Zealand side.

England’s medical team now scrambles to manage workloads, but the resilience shown in the series opener, chasing down a tricky total of 211 with one wicket in hand, hints at the fighting spirit that could define their World Cup preparations. As the second ODI looms, all eyes will be on Wong’s fitness and Dean’s tactical nous to seal the ODI series on 13th May 2026 at County Ground, Northampton.
