Mumbai’s cricketing heartbeat pulsed with pride on Wednesday as the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) rolled out the red carpet at a star-studded awards function, honouring local top performers and unsung heroes who fueled India’s historic ICC Women’s ODI World Cup triumph.

Amid tributes to the city’s enduring legacy, standout women’s contributors like Jemimah Rodrigues, head coach Amol Muzumdar, bowling coach Aavishkar Salvi, and Under-19 World Cup winner Sanika Chalke took centre stage, their achievements spotlighted against the backdrop of India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s ongoing white-ball series in South Africa.

The evening doubled as a heartfelt nod to Mumbai’s pivotal role in India’s maiden senior-level ICC title. Just months ago, from September 30 to November 2, 2025, Kaur’s India stunned Laura Wolvaardt’s South Africa by 52 runs in the final of the 13th ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, hosted across India and partly in Sri Lanka, at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Harmanpreet Kaur became the first Indian captain to lift an ICC trophy at the senior level, a moment etched in emotion as she handed the gleaming silverware to former legends Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Anjum Chopra, part of the broadcasting panel for the tournament. Tears flowed as the icons finally held the World Cup, honouring generations that built the foundation for this breakthrough.

Mumbai’s fingerprints were all over the victory. Jemimah Rodrigues, the elegant Mumbai batter, shone brightly in the campaign, ending as India’s 3rd highest run-scorer with 292 runs at a strike rate of 101.03 and an average of 58.40 in seven innings, including a half-century and an unbeaten fighting century against Australia in the Semi-final.

Amol Muzumdar’s strategic guidance as head coach and Aavishkar Salvi’s sharp bowling insights proved to be game-changers. Their felicitations underscored the city’s talent pipeline, echoed by Sanika Chalke’s heroics, playing a crucial role in India, led by skipper Niki Prasad, defending their Under-19 World Cup title in Malaysia.

The MCA also saluted its own champion sides, including the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy winners and the Women’s Under-15 One-Day Trophy victors, plus the Under-23 Women’s One-Day Trophy holders, proof of sustained dominance across age groups.

The glamour was amplified by luminaries like former India stalwarts Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Rajeev Kulkarni, and Diana Edulji, alongside state ministers Ashish Shelar and Aditi Tatkare. MCA president Ajinkya Naik presided, later declaring, “This evening stands as a powerful testament to the standards Mumbai cricket sets for itself, uncompromising excellence, built on legacy and driven by relentless ambition.

“These achievements are not just milestones, but benchmarks for the future. Our focus remains clear: to strengthen this ecosystem, elevate performance, and ensure the next generation carries this legacy forward at an even greater scale. I congratulate all the awardees who continue to uphold the highest standards of Mumbai cricket.”

Lifetime Achievement Awards added gravitas, with Shobha Pandit (cricketer) and Shrikant Tigdi (administrator) recognised for 2025-26, and Chandrakant Patankar (cricketer) and Ravindra Savant (administrator) for 2024-25, their decades of service cementing Mumbai’s bedrock.

As India, led by Kaur under Muzumdar’s watch, battles in South Africa, trailing 0-3 in the five-match T20I series after losses by 6 wickets (1st), 8 wickets (2nd), and 9 wickets (3rd on April 22 at Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg), eyes turn to redemption. With the 10th ICC Women’s T20 World Cup looming in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5, 2026, Mumbai’s honorees embody the fire to reclaim glory.
