The WCA, which represents professional cricketers worldwide, plays a key role in advocating for player welfare, rights, and involvement in major decisions affecting the sport. Its Player Advisory Board consists of active international cricketers who provide insights on issues such as scheduling, workload, and the overall direction of cricket. With the game evolving rapidly through expanding leagues and global tournaments, the board serves as a crucial bridge between players and administrators.

Athapaththu joins a distinguished group of cricketers on the panel, including Pat Cummins, Jason Holder, Heather Knight, Aiden Markram, Scott Edwards and Laura Wolvaardt. She is also among the newly appointed members, alongside Rashid Khan, Wayne Madsen, Daryl Mitchell and Maddy Green.

Reacting to the appointment, Athapaththu expressed pride in representing not just herself but also her country and region. “I am truly honored and delighted to be appointed to the Player Advisory Board of the World Cricketers’ Association. This is a proud moment not only for me personally, but also for Sri Lanka and the wider Asian cricketing community,” she said.

Her inclusion is particularly important for Asian representation in global cricket discussions. As one of the most experienced and respected players from the region, Athapaththu brings valuable perspective to conversations that often shape the sport’s future. She emphasized the need for inclusivity and equal representation across cricketing nations.

“I look forward to contributing my experience as an international cricketer to help strengthen the voice of players across the world. It is important that players from all regions, especially from Asia, are heard and represented in key decisions that shape the future of the game,” she added.

Her insights are expected to contribute to discussions around player welfare, workload management, and the continued growth of the women’s game.

The WCA, in announcing the updated board, noted that the changes are aimed at reinforcing the collective voice of players at a crucial time for cricket. With increasing commercialization, packed international calendars, and the rise of franchise leagues, ensuring that players have a meaningful say has become more important than ever.

Athapaththu’s appointment marks a proud moment for Sri Lanka and signals a broader shift toward inclusivity in cricket governance. As she steps into this role, her voice is expected to play a key part in shaping a more balanced, player-driven future for the global game.
