“Knocking on the Door Hard,” Niki Prasad Sets Sights on India Debut

For Niki Prasad, ambition has never been in short supply, but what truly defines her is how that ambition has been shaped. At just 20, she stands at an interesting crossroads: already a World Cup-winning captain at the U19 level yet still chasing the bigger dream of representing India at the senior stage. In a detailed conversation with India Today, Niki spoke about the influences, setbacks, and defining moments that have molded her into one of India’s most promising young batters.

At the heart of her journey lies inspiration drawn from Harmanpreet Kaur. For Niki, Harmanpreet’s success is not just something to admire, it is something to chase. She said, “I think her winning the World Cup for India made all of us feel extremely proud. It also inspired a lot of youngsters like me. One day, I would love to do the same for India, to be able to lift the trophy myself.”

That clarity of vision reflects in the way she approaches her own career. Despite already having silverware to her name, including leading India to a U19 Women’s T20 World Cup title, Niki is far from satisfied. Her focus has shifted firmly toward consistency and selection at the highest level.

She explained her mindset, “Going forward, I want to keep pushing in domestic cricket, perform consistently, score as many runs as possible, and aim to be among the highest run-scorers. Ultimately, the biggest goal is to push for a place in the Indian team. That has been my goal for a very long time, and I think this year, I’ll be knocking on the door really hard.”

What makes her story compelling is not just the success she has achieved, but the way she has responded to rejection. Missing out on the 2023 U19 World Cup squad could have been a crushing setback. Instead, it became a catalyst for change. Reflecting on that phase, she said, “I also think not being part of the first Under-19 World Cup was actually a blessing in disguise. That experience really helped shape me into the person I am today. The changes I had to make in those couple of years really helped me take my game to the next level and also perform at that level.”

The results of that transformation are evident in her recent performances. In the Women’s U23 One-Day Trophy, Niki scored 328 runs in eight matches at an average of 46.86 and a strike rate of 112.71—numbers that underline both consistency and attacking intent. Her 123 off 91 balls in one of those games showcased her ability to dominate bowling attacks and convert starts into match-defining innings.

Yet, as she transitions into senior cricket, the challenges have become more nuanced. One such moment came in a Women’s Premier League game, where she fell short of a milestone and a potential match-winning knock for the Delhi Capitals against Gujarat Giants. For many young players, such moments linger as regrets. For Niki, it became a turning point in her approach.

She reflected on that experience with maturity, “I think that match really changed something in my game. To be able to take on world-class all-rounders and hit them for boundaries gave me a lot of confidence and motivation. I genuinely feel that game changed my batting, and that particular innings changed the way I approach batting now. Even though we ended up on the losing side, I think, personally, I evolved after that innings. Of course, I would love to change the result, but there were so many learnings from it. If I’m ever put in that kind of situation again in the future, I believe I’ll be able to cross the line.”

Beyond performances, her development has also been shaped by exposure to elite environments. Sharing dressing rooms with experienced players like Meg Lanning and Jemimah Rodrigues has influenced her understanding of the game—not just technically, but mentally. Whether it is discipline, preparation, or handling pressure, these lessons are gradually reflecting in her cricket.

What stands out most about Niki Prasad is her clarity. She knows where she stands, what she needs to improve, and where she wants to go. There is no sense of complacency despite early success. With a strong domestic record, leadership credentials, and the right mindset, her push toward the Indian senior team feels inevitable. The competition may be intense, but Niki seems prepared for the long haul.

And if her own words are anything to go by, she is not waiting quietly in the wings. She is ready to push, to perform, or as she puts it, to “knock on the door really hard.”
