We are only a few months away from the start of the 10th edition of the women’s T20 World Cup. The host nation has been decided, and this time the honours belong to England. After lengthy qualifiers, the 12 nations that have made the final cut have been decided.

England, the hosts, have made the cut, and the competition will begin on their soil on 12 June, with the final being scheduled for 5 July. The women’s T20 World Cup 2026 is marking a decade of World Cups by being the tenth edition, with the honour to host this prestigious tournament falling to England’s lap for the second time. Interestingly enough, it was England that hosted the inaugural tourney way back in 2009.
Unlike in the previous edition, the number of teams has been increased from 10 to 12. In recent years, the quality of women’s T20 cricket has been slowly but steadily growing, and the increase in the number of participants was more than merited. As we said, the qualifiers were lengthy and hard on the teams, and every nation that made the cut fully deserved to be in England during the summer months of 2026. The list of participants starts with England, and continues with Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ireland, Scotland, and Netherlands.
The automatic qualifications were reserved for the top five nations from the previous edition of the women’s T20 World Cup, and those are Australia, India, New Zealand, the West Indies, and South Africa. The hosts, England, also had a reserved spot. The next two of the qualified teams found their way to the tourney via their women’s T20I rankings on the year, and in addition to the six teams from the above, the next two participants were decided based on their end of the year rankings and those are Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Global qualifiers were the means that other teams had to use to get their ticket to the biggest women’s cricket tourney of the year. The road to the tournament, where some of the best women cricket matches will be played was not easy. Ten teams played out the global qualifiers for a chance to get to the remaining four spots. This part of the qualifiers was divided into two stages.
The initial stage was divided into two groups of five teams. The groups consisted of 5 teams each, with every team playing the other ones once. All matches were single headed round robin matches. Only the top three teams from each group have made it to the next stage. The so-called Super Six stage had every team face each of the remaining five opponents once. When the Super Six stage was done and over with, the top four teams got their places in the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh was the team that dominated the qualifiers, and they have wrapped up the Super Six qualifiers stage with five wins, securing their spot at the WC. With their good form coming into the tournament, Bangladesh are seen as one of the dark horses for winning the upcoming tourney despite not being one of the top ranked teams coming into the World Cup. The rest of the teams that have done enough to get their ticket for the women’s premium 20 over cricket tourney are the likes of Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands. The biggest surprise of the global qualifiers are the Dutch ladies who have secured their first participation at the Women’s T20 World Cup.
March is almost halfway through, leaving a bit over three months to wait until the 2026 T20 Women’s World Cup. The tournament will have 33 matches, played across seven venues all over England. The 12 teams that have qualified will be divided into two groups of six teams. T20 WC is not a forgiving competition, and only the top two teams from each group will reach the semi-finals.
The competition at the 2026 T20 Women’s World Cup will be as hard as ever, and the defending champions, New Zealand, will not have an easy task retaining their crown. Their biggest rivals, Australia, will be looking to continue the global domination as the Southern Stars have won the competition record six times. Other teams from the tourney that have managed to get their hands on the T20 World Cup glory are the hosts England, and the West Indies. Interestingly enough, this format of cricket will be making its debut at the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympic games, putting additional pressure on the teams to perform well at this tournament, and during the next two years, enabling themselves to have a shot at the prestigious Olympic medals.
As we said, the venues for the tournament have already been decided. The games will be played at some legendary stadiums across England and Wales, and those are Bristol County Ground, Edgbaston, Hampshire Bowl, Headingley, Lord’s, Old Trafford and The Oval. We have a lot of good cricket ahead of us during the summer, and we are sure that the excitement will be growing as we get closer to the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. While the fans get ready to cheer, the teams are getting ready to play and win during this tourney. These are the teams with the biggest chances of lifting the much-coveted trophy when it’s all said and done on July 5th.
Australia
The reign over women’s T20 cricket by Australia was interrupted at the previous T20 World Cup. The team from the southern hemisphere will be looking to get back on track and to win the T20 World Cup for the record 7th time. At the moment, they are the best ranked team with a rating of 294, standing clearly at the top of the ten rankings. It’s been a while since Australia wasn’t the best ranked team in the world. When we look at the previous editions of the T20 World Cup barring the one occasion, the Down Under team either won ten tournaments or at least played in the final. The domination of Australia’s team didn’t come overnight. They’ve been doing wonders in their team selection, making fighting for place a religion, leading to an unnatural competition for places. A team that has been winning so much, being consistent over a full decade, is eagerly waiting to get back on top, and the 2026 T20 Women’s World Cup is an ideal opportunity to do so. This is a team that plays well regardless of the pitch conditions and weather, and above all else, usually wins cricket games. We can’t see it being any different in England, and when the time comes all chances are that Australia will be lifting the T20 World Cup come start of July.
England
The host nation was the team that hosted and lifted the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup way back in 2009. That was their first and last trophy at ten tournaments, as what followed was Australia’s relentless domination in the following decade. At the moment, England is the second best team in the world based on rankings. After 46 games played their rating stands at 277, and they are only behind Australia. Their current form, and the fact that they are hosting the tournament makes them the second favorites to win the 2026 T20 World Cup. At the upcoming tournament, England will be relying on the experience of their squad, as they’re entering the tourney as one of the oldest squads. Experience matters at tournaments such as this one, and when you look at the quality and the number of games behind England’s batters you can’t put winning any game on sheer strength behind them. A disciplined team that plays their best when they’re pitted against the best teams out there. In addition to Australia, England enters this tournament with serious chances of winning the tourney, and considering how poorly they played against Australia in some of their most recent encounters at the top level, they will be looking to get one back, and put a smile on the home crowd faces in the process with winning the upcoming tournament. It will not be an easy task, but we don’t see this England side backing down to anyone.
India
If this was the men’s edition of the tournament, the Indian team would be favourites for sure. At the end of the day, they lifted the Men’s T20 World Cup not so long ago. As far as their women’s division goes, they are slightly behind their male counterparts. During the previous ranking period, India has played in 52 T2 matches which was enough for 268 rating. Their chances of winning the 2026 T20 Women’s World Cup, are not non existent, but we just don’t see them as being able to push Australia or England for that matter till the end. Yes, India is another consistent team, and they have been showing as much during the previous period. Yet, they are not seen as a major threat as the last time they faced Australia in the final, they lost to them during the ICC T20 World Cup in 2020. Of course, these are not the same teams they were back in 2020, but despite having enough talent pool to select their payers, and a lot of depth to their starters, India is still pushing to get that one step higher to parry their male counterparts, and to get one back at Australia for the painfully defeat in 2020. They would need plenty of things to go their way to be able to dethrone the most dominant team in women’s T20 cricket that is Australia in 2026.
New Zealand
It is not often that you see reigning champions underestimated this much. At the moment, New Zealand is the fourth best ranked T20 women’s team in the world. After 37 matches on the year, they have amassed rating of 254 and this perfectly sums up their position in the global cricket game. While still the reigning champions, New Zealand are not given too many chances of competing for another trophy. The reason is simple, they were not meant to win it the last time around. New Zealand winning the last edition of the World Cup was a dark horse win if there ever was one. White Ferns were a team that was heavily underestimated by their opponents last time around. They’ve entered the tourney on a ten game losing streak, had no expectations, and played without pressure. All of this led to them surprising many en route to the final, where they had the luck of the draw by getting South Africa to be their opponent of their maiden World Cup. Of course, there’s glory to be found in defending the crown, but considering that no one is underestimating New Zealand this time around, new can see this team not even making it to the semi finals.
South Africa
The last spot for the teams that have a realistic go at the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup belongs to South Africa. It was between them and the West Indies. Considering that SA is only slightly better in the ratings standing at 241 to West Indies’ 238, there is not much difference between these two teams. Yet, the South African team has managed to get to the final this time around, and we know that they liked the taste. While it will not be an easy task repeating that success, and even harder to win it, New Zealand’s success proved that everything is possible when stars align, and the Proteas team will be looking to build on the success they almost achieved last time around. The competition in 2026 is as heavy as it gets, but we are sure that under the right circumstances, South Africa can make it at least to the semi final.
June is around the corner, and the competition that will see the best women’s T20 teams going at each other, the 2026 World Cup is almost here. Let the best team win.
