Molly Penfold, Polly Inglis Called Up as Flora Devonshire Ruled Out of Home Series against Zimbabwe

New Zealand have suffered an untimely setback ahead of their home white-ball series against Zimbabwe, with Flora Devonshire ruled out after fracturing her left pinky finger. New Zealand Cricket confirmed the injury in a team update, announcing that Molly Penfold has been added to the T20I squad while Polly Inglis will join the ODI group as cover.

Devonshire sustained the injury in the lead-up to the series, and medical assessments subsequently deemed her unavailable for selection in both formats. The fracture requires a period of rest and rehabilitation, effectively ending her involvement before the first ball of the series has been bowled.

The development marks another frustrating chapter for the promising all-rounder. A similar setback occurred when Devonshire was selected in New Zealand’s squad for the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup, only to be ruled out due to injury before the tournament began. That earlier disappointment had interrupted her progress at a crucial stage, and this latest injury again halts momentum just as she was looking to cement a more permanent role in the White Ferns setup.

The upcoming series against Zimbabwe was expected to provide Devonshire with valuable match time at home. With New Zealand balancing experienced campaigners and emerging talent, the fixtures offered an opportunity for players on the fringe of the first choice XI to push their case. Devonshire’s versatility had given selectors flexibility in shaping the lineup, with the ability to contribute to multiple phases of the game.

In response, selectors have opted for format-specific replacements. Penfold’s recall to the T20I squad strengthens the pace attack. The right-arm seamer brings international experience and an attacking approach suited to the demands of the shortest format. Her ability to generate bounce and apply pressure in the powerplay overs adds depth to New Zealand’s bowling options as they prepare to take on Zimbabwe.

Inglis, meanwhile, joins the ODI squad, providing reinforcement in the wicketkeeping and middle-order departments. A composed batter with a solid domestic record, Inglis offers balance in the 50-over setup, where stability and the capacity to construct longer innings are essential. Her inclusion ensures the squad retains flexibility in both batting combinations and fielding roles.

The series itself carries significance beyond the immediate contest. While Zimbabwe are continuing to develop at international level, New Zealand will view the matches as an important opportunity to fine-tune combinations and build consistency before the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in July. With a demanding international calendar ahead, maintaining squad depth and readiness remains a priority for team management.

The series will get underway later this week with the opening T20I at home, marking the start of a multi-match white-ball contest before the teams shift to the ODI leg. It will also signal the beginning of a new leadership chapter, as Amelia Kerr leads the White Ferns for the first time as full-time captain.
