White Fern Lauren Down Calls Time on 15-Year Career, Leaves Lasting Auckland Legacy

Lauren Down, the 30-year-old Auckland-born batter and proud White Fern, has announced her retirement from a stellar 15-year cricket career, leaving behind a legacy of reliability, resilience, and remarkable domestic dominance.

A product of Takapuna Cricket Club, Down debuted for the Auckland Hearts in 2011 with a T20 against Canterbury at Melville Park, going on to represent her hometown side an astonishing 202 times, 101 List A and 101 T20 matches.

As the Hearts’ third all-time appearance maker, she retires as their third-leading T20 run-scorer with 1,496 runs and fourth in List A with 2,690, while claiming 41 wickets in her early allrounder days. Her contributions powered five Hallyburton Johnstone Shield triumphs (2011-12, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, 2019-20), including a match-winning 90 in the 2019-20 Grand Final that sealed a 67-run victory over Northern Districts at Seddon Park.

In the ongoing New Zealand 50-over domestic season, she has scored 179 runs at a strike rate of 61.93 and an average of 19.88 in 9 innings, including a half-century in 10 matches for Auckland Hearts. Down’s domestic prowess earned her a White Ferns ODI debut in a thrilling one-run win over West Indies in Lincoln (March 2018), leading to 35 ODIs and 13 T20Is.

Highlights included a gritty 107 in a warm-up against a Governor-General’s XI in Sydney and a classy 90 in the first ODI versus Australia at Bay Oval in 2021. A thumb injury sidelined her from the 2022 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup and Commonwealth Games, but she roared back for the 2022 West Indies tour and the 2023 T20 World Cup in South Africa.

Opting out of a central contract in 2023-24 to welcome daughter Ruby, Down returned strongly for the 2024-25 season, touring England and India, with her final White Ferns outing in the third ODI against Australia at Cello Basin Reserve, Wellington, on 23rd December 2024 last summer.

Renowned for her impeccable timing, technique as a right-hander, and elite fielding at cover or point, Down also shone overseas with Perth Scorchers in the WBBL and Oxfordshire in the UK. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “I have loved my time being part of the White Ferns group, and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to have represented my country. I will miss being around the girls, but I’m now looking forward to watching from the sidelines and seeing what this group is able to achieve.”

White Ferns head coach Ben Sawyer lauded her impact, “Lauren has been a fantastic team person and has always given her all in the White Ferns environment. It’s a testament to her dedication and commitment to her game that she was able to go away to welcome her first child and then return to the level of international cricket so quickly.”

Teammate Maddy Green, who grew up alongside Down in Auckland’s age-group system, Hearts, and White Ferns, added a personal touch, “She’s always been an incredibly hard worker, humble and a great teammate to anyone she played alongside. It’s been amazing to see her become a Mum to Ruby, and I’m so proud of how she’s carried herself coming back to being a professional cricketer whilst balancing motherhood.”

Lauren Down’s retirement marks the end of an era for Auckland Cricket, too, where she credited the setup deeply, “A huge part of my cricket career has been in the Auckland setup, and I cannot thank Auckland Cricket, my coaches and teammates enough for the part they have played in my journey.” As she steps away, the women’s game loses a quiet achiever whose balance of motherhood and elite cricket inspired many.
