Sports Southern Titans won against East Tridents Sports Phoenix by 5 runs in a nail-biting match at Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba. After losing to Central Sharks, the Titans have made a good comeback and are eyeing for the final spot.
Teams are fighting it hard as the league stage of the Courts Women’s T20 Grand Slam is at its last phase. After Starblazers’ loss to the LCB Sharks led them out of the tournament, Phoenix and Titans are in a competition with LCB to finish at the top of the table.
Southern Titans won the toss and opted to bat first. Deandra Dottin made a brisk half-century. She hit 5 fours and 4 sixes scoring 57 runs off 48 balls. Britney Cooper also hit 2 maximums and 4 boundaries en route her 26-ball 35. Titans, who at one point were at 114/3, had a major collapse as they got bowled out in the penultimate ball of the innings. Shenelle Lord and Qiana Joseph both added 10 runs each to their team’s total. Titans finished on 136 runs in 20 overs.
From the Phoenix, it was Steffie Soogrim who was lethal with the ball. She took 5 wickets giving only 29 runs. Her 5-fer was the key reason of Titans’ collapse.
While chasing, Phoenix looked in good touch as openers Hayley Matthews Kycia Knight gave them a good start. But then Titans’ Renelle Dookie and Amy Ramoutar removed Knight and Matthews respectively to shift the momentum towards their side. While Matthews hit 34 runs, Knight scored 39 runs. They each hit a maximum during their stay in the middle. Captain Stacy Ann-King and Aaliyah Alleyne made 24 and 13 runs respectively. Phoenix could only make 131 runs and lost 6 wickets in their 20 overs. Ramoutar returned with the figures of 3/19.
Phoenix thus had a narrow defeat to Titans. They lost the match by 5 runs to give Titans an edge in the competition.
The semifinal of the Courts Women’s T20 Grand Slam takes place on Thursday wherein the second and third-placed teams will fight it out for a place in the final. The topper of the league stage will directly reach the final on Friday to lock horns with the semifinal winner. Both the knockout games will be played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
