Fran Jonas Opts Out of 2025-26 Super Smash to Remodel Bowling Action

In a mature move that underscores her commitment to long term growth, White Ferns and Auckland Hearts off-spinner Fran Jonas has opted out of the 2025-26 Super Smash, New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition. The 21-year-old right hand batter and slow left-arm orthodox bowler is prioritizing technical adjustments to her bowling, stepping away from the T20 spotlight to rebuild her arsenal.

Jonas’s move comes hot on the heels of her withdrawal from the North Island vs South Island series that was played last week, remodeling her action. New Zealand Cricket, as well as Auckland Cricket are fully supporting her and given her a complete go ahead for her break that will allow her to rework her bowling for a span of six weeks. She hopes to make a complete comeback during the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, domestic One Day fixture.

At just 21, Jonas has already carved a niche as one of New Zealand’s most promising spin talents. Debuting for the White Ferns in 2021 at age 16, she burst onto the scene with her flighted left-arm orthodox deliveries, troubling batters with sharp turns and deceptive dip. Her T20I record boasts 30 wickets at an economy of 5.96, including standout performances like 4/22, making it her best bowling figure.

Speaking on the development, New Zealand Cricket (NCZ) Head of Women’s High-Performance Liz Green said, “Taking some time away from the pressures of in-match cricket is what’s best for Fran at this point in time.” She emphasized Jonas’s central role in White Ferns’ future, adding, “Fran is integral to the White Ferns programmers plans, and she has the full support of NZC and Auckland Cricket as she works through these changes. Fran deserves huge credit for the maturity she has shown in making this decision and we know she will benefit from the time away to focus on herself.”

Jonas’s skills add versatility; For Jonas, mastering consistency could elevate her from domestic mainstay to the 2026 T20 World Cup wrecker, especially on spin conducive pitches.

Auckland Hearts, without their spin spearhead, will face hosts Northern Brave at Seddon Park on Boxing Day, December 26, in their campaign opener. The opening encounter is expected to be an exciting one, given that the competition will be played under the new scoring system, which encourages aggressive scoring.

Jonas’s withdrawal highlights the proactive player management shaping modern cricket. By choosing development over immediate team needs, she’s betting on a sharper, more potent return potentially unlocking her peak years just as White Ferns gear up for a packed 2026 calendar.
