Michael Klinger has been named the head coach of the Welsh Fire Women’s team, a significant move for The Hundred as the franchise gears up for the 2026 season. The former Australian cricketer brings a wealth of experience and tactical knowledge to the role. In collaboration with General Manager Mark Wallace, Klinger will also focus on recruitment for both the women’s and men’s teams, aiming to build a strong and competitive squad.

Klinger, a right-handed batter, has had a remarkable career spanning nearly two decades, known for his composure and consistency at the top of the order. He scored over 24,000 runs in total across domestic and international cricket, with 56 centuries and many crucial innings that contributed to his team’s successes.
His playing days included stints with South Australia, Western Australia, and Gloucestershire, and he was instrumental in the Perth Scorchers’ success in the Big Bash League. Klinger’s standout season in 2015–16 saw him score 414 runs, showcasing his ability to anchor innings and perform under pressure.
Though his international career was brief, Klinger made his mark in T20Is for Australia in 2017, scoring an impressive 62 against Sri Lanka at the age of 36. His journey through cricket is a testament to resilience and passion, qualities he aims to instill in the Welsh Fire team.
Post-retirement from the game in 2018, Klinger was the head coach of the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League for two seas0ns. He then served as the assistant coach at Sydney Thunder in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL 2023-24), where the side finished fourth, recovering from the bottom (8th) finish from the year 2022-23. He has since coached Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and Manchester Originals in The Hundred (Women).
