Sunil Gavaskar Condemns Harassment of Australian Female Cricketers, Demands Strict Punishment

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar expressed deep anger and disappointment after learning that two Australian women’s cricketers were harassed in Indore during the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. According to Cricket Australia’s statement, two of their players were “touched inappropriately” by a motorcyclist while walking from their hotel to a nearby café in Indore. The players immediately reported the matter to their team security officer, following which the police were called. The accused, identified as Akil Khan, was arrested later in the day, and an investigation is currently underway.

Reacting strongly to the incident, Gavaskar said such acts bring disrepute to the country and go against India’s core values of hospitality and respect toward guests.

“Yes, I think because we are famous for Atithi Devo Bhava, to hear of this is very, very sad,” Gavaskar told India Today. “It is, without question, a heinous incident. The law will take its course, but I do hope that the guilty person is punished severely, you lock them up and throw away the key. That’s the only way, I think. Just lock him up and throw the keys away.”

The Madhya Pradesh Police confirmed that the two cricketers were stalked, and one was molested while walking in the Khajrana Road area of Indore. Police acted swiftly following the complaint, arresting the accused within six hours.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also issued a statement, strongly denouncing the act and assuring that security protocols would be reviewed to prevent such incidents in the future.

“It is a very condemnable but stray incident. India is known for its hospitality and care. We have zero tolerance for such incidents. We appreciate the State Police (Madhya Pradesh) for their prompt action to nab the culprit. Let the law take its course to punish the culprit. We assure to revisit our safety protocols if required to further tighten the security,” said BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia in an official statement.

Despite the distressing off-field incident, Australia continued their strong run in the Women’s World Cup 2025. The team defeated South Africa by seven wickets in their final group-stage match in Indore, securing the top spot on the table with 13 points from seven matches, six wins and one no-result.

The victory sets up a high-stakes semi-final clash against Harmanpreet Kaur’s India, a matchup that promises intensity and significance, especially in the wake of the recent incident.

The episode has cast a shadow over what has otherwise been a successful tournament for both India and Australia. However, the firm and unified response from authorities, cricketing bodies, and legends like Sunil Gavaskar underscores the sport’s commitment to player safety and dignity.
