Phoebe Litchfield Becomes 2nd Youngest Australian After Meg Lanning to 1000 ODI Runs

At just 22 years of age, Phoebe Litchfield seals a landmark achievement that speaks volumes about both her talent and temperament. The elegant left-hander from New South Wales becomes the second youngest Australian, after former skipper Meg Lanning, to complete 1,000 runs in One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

She achieved the landmark in their ODI World Cup campaign opener against New Zealand, led by skipper Sophie Devine on 1st October 2025, at the Holkar Stadium, Indore. Skipper Alyssa Healy won the toss and opted to bat first. The Healy-Litchfield opening pair not only provided them with a flying start, en route to their partnership, Phoebe Litchfield also achieved a memorable landmark of 1,000 ODI runs in style, smashing a boundary to Jess Kerr in the 4th over of the innings.

Amelia Kerr ended Litchfield’s stay (45 off 31 balls) on the first ball of her spell in the 11th over of the innings to provide the 2nd breakthrough for her side.

For a batter who only debuted in the format less than three years ago, Litchfield’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable, and her milestone adds another glowing chapter to Australia’s proud tradition of nurturing world-class batters in women’s cricket.

Litchfield first announced herself on the international stage on 11th December 2022, when she made her T20I debut against India at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. A month later, she was entrusted with the demands of the 50-over format, making her ODI debut on 16th January 2023, as a 19-year-old against Pakistan in Brisbane. Few could have predicted how quickly she would adapt to international cricket, but in less than three years, she has established herself as an anchor in Australia’s top order.

In her brief yet impactful career so far, she has accumulated 1,028 runs in 30 ODIs at an average of 39.53 and a strike rate of 84.53, registering seven half-centuries and two centuries. Those numbers underscore her maturity as a batter who can both steady an innings and accelerate when the situation demands.

Among her growing list of performances, one innings already stands out as career-defining. On 2nd January 2024, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Litchfield produced her finest ODI performance to date, scoring a majestic 119 off 125 balls against India. Her knock, laden with 16 fours and a six, came with the composure of a seasoned campaigner rather than a youngster barely a year into her international career.

That performance was more than just a solitary high note; it was part of a stunning three-match series, where she amassed 260 runs, earning both Player of the Match and the Player of the Series accolades. It was the kind of tour that announced her as not just a promising youngster, but a genuine match-winner for Australia.

The significance of Litchfield achieving the 1,000 ODI runs goes beyond the statistics. To achieve the feat before turning 23 would align her name alongside Meg Lanning, arguably one of Australia’s greatest ODI batters, and a modern giant of the women’s game. Comparisons are inevitable, but what makes Litchfield exceptional is her blend of orthodoxy and innovation. She possesses the trademark patience and precision of an opener, while also showing flashes of flair that allow her to dominate attacks.

In an era where batting strike rates and adaptability are under constant scrutiny, Litchfield’s ability to balance temperament with controlled aggression makes her a crucial asset in Australia’s batting arsenal in the World Cup.

The perfect stage for this milestone also seems to be set. Australia, under skipper Alyssa Healy, are up to defend their title in the 13th edition, eyeing the 8th one in the glorious cabinet. Against quality opposition and in testing subcontinental conditions, Litchfield has made history on Indian soil, the same country where she walked into the limelight in her very first international appearance.

As Litchfield has surpassed the landmark, her journey reflects both continuity and promise. Like the Australian greats before her, she has demonstrated consistency, temperament, and the hunger for big runs. Yet, given her age and the early stage of her career, the milestone is less a destination and more a springboard for bigger achievements.

With her composure, stroke-play, and knack of rising to the occasion, traits she has already displayed in Mumbai and beyond, Phoebe Litchfield is not just following in the footsteps of Meg Lanning but carving her own path as the next great torchbearer of Australian women’s cricket.
