A right-handed opener with calmness and resilience, she has played a pioneering role in carving a batting identity for Bangladesh, becoming the country’s first-ever centurion in women’s ODIs and laying the platform for many of the team’s historic wins.

Sharmin was among the early generation of players who stepped into the international arena when Bangladesh women’s cricket was still finding its footing. She made her ODI debut in November 2011 against Ireland. Sharmin’s defining moment came a decade later, during the 2021 Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe.

Sharmin Akhter’s Breakthrough Game

Against the United States, she produced a masterclass in patience and stroke play, scoring an unbeaten 130 off 141 balls, an innings decorated with 11 boundaries. It wasn’t just a personal triumph but a landmark for Bangladesh cricket: Sharmin became the first Bangladeshi woman to score a century in ODIs, surpassing the previous best of 75.

Her record-breaking knock also helped Bangladesh post one of their highest team totals in Women’s ODIs (322/5), showcasing the growing potential of the side’s batting.

Across her career, Sharmin has been the player tasked with providing solidity and partnerships at the top of the order. By 2025, in 45 ODI innings, she had scored 1129 runs, with the highest score of 96, numbers that reflect both her consistency and her ability to anchor Bangladesh’s batting.

As the first centurion in Bangladesh women’s ODI history, Sharmin Akhter Supta has already secured her place in the country’s cricketing legacy. But beyond records, her contributions as an opener, facing new-ball attacks from the world’s best and providing stability in pressure situations have been just as valuable.
