For Nadine de Klerk, cricket was never the obvious path. When young, she excelled in field hockey and javelin, showing the kind of athletic versatility that could have taken her in many directions. But at just 17 years old, when she earned her first South Africa call-up during the 2017 Quadrangular Series, she made a choice and it’s one that has paid off handsomely.

Today, de Klerk stands as one of South Africa’s most dynamic all-rounders, already past the 100 international caps mark, and leaving a mark not just for her country but also across the world in the Women’s Premier League, Women’s Big Bash League, and The Hundred.

Nadine de Klerk’s International Career

What defines de Klerk is not just her skill but her grit. That quality was on full display in the 2020 T20 World Cup semi-final against Australia, when she returned to the XI under immense pressure and produced a spell of 3/19 against the most dominant side in women’s cricket. It was a performance that announced her readiness to stand tall in the game’s biggest moments.

Since then, she has grown into a consistent dual threat. With the bat, she has shown flashes of explosive hitting, collecting 726 runs in 42 ODI innings, including a fighting 60 against Pakistan in 2023 when the rest of the line-up faltered. With the ball, her pace and accuracy have brought her 59 ODI wickets, highlighted by a career-best 4/32, also against Pakistan, in a series where she was crowned Player of the Series for her all-round brilliance.

What makes de Klerk particularly exciting is that her ceiling still feels far away. At just 24, she has already played a Test, featured at two World Cups, represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Games, and been part of some of the biggest franchise leagues in women’s cricket. Yet, her hunger for growth and her ability to rise to big occasions suggest that her best is still to come.

For South Africa, Nadine de Klerk isn’t just a reliable performer, she is a future pillar of the team, capable of shaping matches with both bat and ball. And as women’s cricket continues to grow globally, de Klerk’s fearless style of play is perfectly placed to shine on the sport’s brightest stages.
