How did Pakistan and Bangladesh make it to the ODI World Cup 2025?
The Nigar Sultana-led Bangladesh and Fatima Sana-led Pakistan qualified for the tournament through the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup Global Qualifier hosted by Pakistan in April 2025.
Pakistan finished at the top of the table with a flawless record of 5 wins from 5 games, gaining them 10 points. Bangladesh eventually very narrowly edged out the West Indies on the net run rate to claim the 2nd spot with 6 points from five games, including three victories and a couple of defeats in their campaign. As a result of their top two finish, they booked their spot for the upcoming 13th edition of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup hosted by India from 30th September 2025.
Why Sri Lanka as the co-host?
As Pakistan, led by skipper Fatima Sana, have secured their spot for the upcoming edition of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 hosted by India, their games in the tournament will be played in Sri Lanka, due to their ongoing cross-border tensions with India. The ICC had also released an official announcement to put to bed the never-ending debate of a venue for a clash between India and Pakistan, ahead of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.
The announcement was that India and Pakistan matches hosted by either country at ICC Events during the 2024 – 2027 cycle will be played at a neutral venue.
