What did Sarah Bryce share on Scotland’s World Cup qualification ambitions, the WPL, and more

Sarah Bryce is the only Scottish player in the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) edition and remains the only player from an associate nation to be participating in the WPL 2025. Playing for Delhi Capitals, Bryce has been a constant presence behind the wicket, and her handy contributions have played a key role in Delhi’s current top position on the table.

In a recent interview with WION, Bryce spoke about how it is for her to play in the WPL, the pressure, the dual role she holds in the team and more. Talking about playing the WPL and having played in other leagues around the world, Bryce spoke about what sets the WPL aside.

“It’s definitely been a high-intensity tournament with lots going on behind the scenes as well, which has been fun to be part of. I think I’ve been lucky to be involved in The Hundred for a few years now and the Big Bash at the end of last year, which has helped prepare me a little bit for it,” says the Capitals keepers.

While generally in leagues such as the WPL and WBBL, the lengthy period means players get breaks with squad rotation playing an important part, Bryce has been one of the few players in the Capitals’ current set-up who has played in all of their games in the WPL 2025 season, and the Scottish star shared insight about managing two roles.

“I’ve not actually had to do a huge amount with the bat recently because we’ve been doing so well, which has been great for the team. But I’m really pleased with how it’s been going. That’s one of my favorite parts about cricket—the tactical side to it, the fact that you can be put in any sort of different situation, and you’ve got to find a way. I love that kind of thinking element. It’s a slightly new role than what I play in a lot of teams, but I’m really enjoying the challenge of trying to figure that out,” said Bryce.

Hailing from an associate nation, Bryce also spoke about the experiences with the Capitals’ coaching staff and their head coach Jonathan Batty, who was also with Bryce in The Hundred at the Oval Invincibles.

“They’ve all been brilliant. I’ve absolutely loved the training sessions, getting to pick their brains and get little nuggets off them. You can just pick up so much from them, seeing them go about their business,” Bryce was high praise for the coaching staff at the Capitals camp.

Bryce also aims to use her time and experience at the WPL to help Scotland make it to the main event such as the 2025 World Cup, scheduled later this year in India, and she spoke about how the WPL can be a steppingstone and put the light on the smaller nations and their players.

“It’s going to be tough work because it’s only an eight-team World Cup, but that’s a big goal for us. Being able to put in performances to help whatever team I’m playing in be successful is the main goal at the moment. Hopefully, I can represent associate nations well and get more of us in future editions,” Bryce is determined to get Scotland up the ranks and amongst the bigger guns.

Scheduled to be played in India later this year, the World Cup will be preceded by the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers, which are scheduled to be held in Pakistan in April-May 2025 and will serve as the final qualification stage for the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup. Scotland will face stiff competition from Pakistan, West Indies, Ireland, Bangladesh, and Thailand, and are preparing for the same in a training camp at Desert Springs.
