Meg Lanning, widely regarded as one of the greatest women’s cricketers of all time, has a great trophy cabinet that is a testament to her unparalleled success. Her career is marked by two Women Cricket World Cup titles, five ICC Women’s T20 World Cup titles and a Commonwealth Games gold. Her individual records are equally impressive, holding the record for most Women’s ODI centuries and being the first Australian to score 2,000 T20I runs.

Although Lanning retired from international cricket in November 2023, she continues to be involved in the sport, playing in the domestic cricket and leagues like Women’s Big Bash League and captaining Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League. She has taken Delhi to their two consecutive finals, however ending up as the runners-up both times. She was the leading run scorer in WPL 2023 and finished a close second behind Ellyse Perry in 2024.
In the midst of WPL 2025, former Indian women’s team coach WV Raman took to social media to share his view that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should consider appointing Lanning as a mentor for the Indian Women’s team ahead of the ICC World Cup this year. Raman cited Lanning’s familiarity with Indian conditions and Indian cricket, gained through her participation in the WPL as a key factor in his recommendation.
This proposal has sparked mixed reactions from the netizens. While many agree that Meg Lanning’s winning mentality and experience makes her an ideal candidate for the role others feel that such a critical role should go to an ex-Indian women cricketer. Some also suggested that she deserves a break before getting into mentorship roles and expressed doubts over Cricket Australia’s willingness to let that happen.
“Brilliant choice, we need someone like her with that winning mentality. Meg is a great captain, and she knows how to win the multi-national tournaments” – A user said on Female Cricket’s post on Instagram.
“Yes absolutely! Meg would be ideal for so many reasons. She has always wanted to ensure the games become better. She carries so much knowledge and is so highly regarded.” – another commented.
“We have several knowledgeable ex woman cricketers. While I do not doubt Meg’s abilities. The role of a mentor needs to go to someone who understands ground realities of the players not restricted to just playing conditions in a game. Therefore, in my personal opinion such a critical role must go to an ex-Indian women cricketer.” – a fan pointed out.
“If Meg is alright. She’s still playing for the domestic teams and franchises. And she deserves a chill out before she gets into any of these roles.”- another user reflected.
