Hayley Matthews registers 8th ODI century, converts her sixth consecutive fifty into century

In the opening ODI at Basseterre, West Indies thumped Bangladesh by nine wickets after chasing down 199 in just 31.4 overs. The game’s hero, Hayley Matthews, took 2/41 with the ball and smashed an undefeated 104 off 93 balls. This win demonstrated West Indies’ supremacy in every aspect of the game and earned them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Matthews won Player of the Match for her all-around skill. She had already turned each of her previous six ODI fifties into hundreds, setting a record in women’s ODI history, and this century continues her incredible run.

Matthews passed Sarah Taylor of England, Amy Satterthwaite of New Zealand, and former India captain Mithali Raj, all of whom have seven centuries to their names in the format, and tied Sophie Devine, Karen Rolton, and Laura Wolvaardt on the list of batters with eight hundreds.

She now owns the record for the most 50-to-100 conversions in women’s ODIs, having surpassed the previous record of four set by Amy Satterthwaite, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Laura Wolvaardt.

This is how Matthews’ stretch compares to the best:

Hayley Matthews (West Indies): 8 centuries, 6 fifties – Conversion Rate: 57.1%

Amy Satterthwaite (New Zealand): 7 centuries, 27 fifties – Conversion Rate: 20.6%

Nat Sciver-Brunt (England): 6 centuries, 26 fifties – Conversion Rate: 18.8%

Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa): 5 centuries, 28 fifties – Conversion Rate: 15.2%

Matthews currently has 2,644 runs in ODIs, surpassing two Australian superstars on the overall runs list in the ODI format, Rachael Haynes and Beth Mooney. She scored 469 runs with an impressive strike rate of 88.3 and an average of 78.2 in the ODI format in 2024.

Among batters with a minimum of three centuries in women’s ODIs, Matthews boasts one of the highest conversion rates in history:

Player Conversion Rate (%) Centuries Fifties
Annabel Sutherland (Australia) 60.0% 3 2
Hayley Matthews (West Indies) 57.1% 8 6
Meg Lanning (Australia) 41.7% 15 21
Jan Brittin (England) 38.5% 5 8
Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka) 34.6% 9 17

Two of Hayley Matthews’ outstanding conversion knocks that are particularly notable, 119 vs New Zealand (Auckland, 2022) and against India in the recently concluded ODI series.

Matthews made a brilliant knock of 119 to solidify the innings with her steady aggressiveness as the West Indies chased 256 on New Zealand soil. She helped lead the West Indies to an exciting victory in a high-stress World Cup match with her innings, which was full of 16 boundaries. In addition, it was her first World Cup century.

In India vs. West Indies, Hayley Matthews took command and served as the anchor as the West Indies batting lineup broke under pressure while chasing a daunting 359 runs. With a single in the 35th over, she reached her seventh ODI century. Matthews’ century in just 99 balls demonstrated her tenacity and kept her team in the chase.

Matthews’ ability to turn starts into innings that impact a game demonstrates her maturity and dominance as a batter. Her remarkable conversion percentage of 57.1% and her six-consecutive 50-to-100 conversion streak puts her in exceptional company. The West Indies are seeing a comeback under Matthews’ leadership, owing to her outstanding all-around skills.
